Exploitation Conditions

No authentication is required (CVSS PR:N) and no user interaction beyond browsing is needed (UI:N). The critical limiting condition is that the attacker must control or influence git commit content in at least one repository that the vulnerable GitList instance browses - either by having direct push access to such a repository, or by the GitList deployment being configured to display repositories sourced from untrusted parties. GitList deployments that only expose repositories with fully controlled, trusted commit histories are not meaningfully at risk from external actors. The availability impact is scoped to the GitList PHP process only (VA:L); the underlying git repository data on disk is not affected. Exploitation does not require any specific non-default configuration of GitList beyond normal operation.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.9 with AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N reflects low-complexity unauthenticated remote exploitation, which is operationally significant even though the sole impact is limited availability (VA:L) - no confidentiality or integrity loss is associated with this flaw. No EPSS score was provided in the input data, so probabilistic exploitation frequency cannot be quantified. The absence of a CISA KEV listing means confirmed widespread active exploitation is not established; the E:P modifier and GitHub issue reference confirm a public proof-of-concept exists, lowering the skill bar for attackers. The practical blast radius is limited to disrupting the GitList web interface - underlying git repository data is unaffected. For public-facing or internally critical GitList instances, prompt patching is warranted given the zero-authentication, publicly documented attack path. For isolated or internal deployments with network access controls, priority is moderate.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with write access to any git repository browsed by a vulnerable GitList instance pushes a commit whose message or metadata is crafted to trigger pathological behavior in SimpleXMLElement - for example, malformed XML sequences or deeply nested structures embedded in commit fields. When any user (or the attacker directly) causes GitList to render a page that calls parseCommitsDataXml against that repository's log output, the PHP process crashes or hangs, making the GitList service unavailable. A public proof-of-concept is documented in GitHub issue #948 (https://github.com/klaussilveira/gitlist/issues/948).

AnalysisAI

GitList 2.0.0's XML-based commit parser in CommandLine.php can be remotely triggered without authentication to cause a denial-of-service condition, crashing or hanging the PHP process that renders the GitList interface. The root cause is PHP's SimpleXMLElement being used to parse git log output formatted as XML - commit content can be crafted to cause pathological resource consumption or unhandled parse failures (CWE-404). A public proof-of-concept exists per GitHub issue #948 and the CVSS 4.0 E:P exploitability modifier; the flaw is not listed in CISA KEV, so mass active exploitation is not confirmed at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade GitList to version 3.0.0-beta, which resolves the vulnerability via commit f67609d52c1812fa8a7ed80eae5e795cfd72115f (https://github.com/klaussilveira/gitlist/commit/f67609d52c1812fa8a7ed80eae5e795cfd72115f); the release is available at https://github.com/klaussilveira/gitlist/releases/tag/3.0.0-beta. Note that 3.0.0-beta is a pre-release; evaluate stability before deploying to production, as beta APIs or behavior may differ from 2.0.0. If immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict network access to the GitList instance using firewall rules or a reverse proxy allowlist limited to trusted IP ranges - this eliminates the unauthenticated remote attack vector entirely with no functional side effects for authorized users. Alternatively, disable GitList's exposure of repositories containing untrusted or user-controlled commit content until the patch is applied.

Technical ContextAI · show details

GitList is a PHP web application for browsing git repositories. The vulnerable path, src/SCM/System/Git/CommandLine.php, previously used a hardcoded DEFAULT_COMMIT_FORMAT constant that embedded git log output fields directly into XML tags (e.g., <subject><![CDATA[%s]]></subject>) and then parsed the result with PHP's SimpleXMLElement class. CWE-404 (Improper Resource Shutdown or Release) describes the root cause: SimpleXMLElement fails to properly bound or release resources when processing malformed, deeply nested, or otherwise problematic XML constructed from git commit data. The fix in commit f67609d52c1812fa8a7ed80eae5e795cfd72115f completely removes SimpleXMLElement and the XML format string, replacing them with a random 16-byte hex delimiter (bin2hex(random_bytes(16))) that avoids XML parsing entirely. Affected CPE: cpe:2.3:a:klaussilveira:gitlist:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.
