| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires three concrete conditions: (1) the attacker must have access to the CAN bus (adjacent access, e.g., through a compromised node) - this is not internet-reachable; (2) the target C-Open device must have a user-application-defined identity object 0x1018 that is MISSING one or more required subindexes (a misconfiguration - correctly configured identity objects are not affected); and (3) the attacker must be able to initiate the LSS (Layer Setting Services) protocol against that device. No authentication is required (PR:N) and no user interaction is needed. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: the adjacent (bus-local) attack vector, the dependency on a non-default/misconfigured identity object, and availability-only impact (crash, no data compromise or code execution). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded denial-of-service issue, not a critical widespread threat. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:A/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) scoring 7.1 is internally consistent with the description: exploitation is unauthenticated and low-complexity but requires ADJACENT access - specifically presence on the CAN bus - rather than true internet-facing network reach, which substantially narrows the attacker population to those who already have a foothold on the bus (e.g., via a compromised node, as the description explicitly states). Impact is availability-only (VC:N/VI:N/VA:H, CWE-476 NULL pointer dereference → device crash); there is no confidentiality or integrity loss and no code execution. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation. A key limiting condition dampens real risk further: the target device must have a misconfigured identity object (0x1018) lacking required subindexes, so default/correctly-configured devices are not affected. Net: a legitimate patch-worthy DoS for CAN/CANopen operators, but 'high CVSS with real-world risk gated by bus access and a configuration precondition' rather than an urgent broad-exposure emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has compromised one node on a CANopen network (or otherwise gained CAN bus access) targets a C-Open device whose user application defined identity object 0x1018 without all required subindexes. The attacker initiates the LSS (Layer Setting Services) configuration protocol against that device, triggering a NULL pointer dereference that crashes the device and causes a denial of service. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis. |

NULL pointer dereference in RT-Labs AB C-Open (CANopen protocol stack, all versions before 1.1.1) lets an unauthenticated attacker who already has access to the CAN bus crash an affected device by starting the LSS (Layer Setting Services) protocol against a node whose user application defined identity object 0x1018 without all of its required subindexes. Impact is availability-only (CVSS 4.0 base 7.1; independently assessed as CVSS 3.1 AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/A:H), meaning a device reset/denial of service rather than data disclosure or code execution, and exploitation is bounded by three prerequisites: bus-local (adjacent) access - reachable, for example, through a compromised node, not from the internet - a misconfigured, non-default identity object, and the ability to send LSS frames. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not confirmed as actively exploited (not in CISA KEV). Fixed in C-Open 1.1.1, the same release that also addresses CVE-2026-82358.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade C-Open to 1.1.1 (https://github.com/rtlabs-com/c-open/releases/tag/public%2Fv1.1.1), which fixes both CVE-2026-82357 and CVE-2026-82358; consult the RT-Labs advisory RRTL-260929-01 (https://rt-labs.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/RRTL-260929-01.pdf) and release notes at https://docs.rt-labs.com/c-open for rebuild/porting guidance, and redeploy firmware built against the patched stack. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most direct compensating control is to correct the user application's object dictionary so that object 0x1018 defines subindex 0 plus all mandatory subindexes 1-3, which removes the trigger condition without side effects; alternatively, compile out or disable LSS support if the product does not need dynamic node-ID/bitrate configuration (trade-off: loses in-field LSS-based commissioning and reconfiguration, and the fix becomes permanent build-time policy). Because the attack requires CAN bus access and LSS frames, network-level containment helps: isolate/segment the CAN bus, place protocol gateways or CAN firewalls between zones, and filter or reject LSS frames (COB-IDs 0x7E4/0x7E5, plus the LSS master/node ID range) from untrusted segments (trade-off: adds latency and can break legitimate commissioning tools). Monitor nodes for unexpected resets or watchdog restarts as an indicator of exploit attempts; note that these compensating controls reduce exposure but do not eliminate the defect, so patching to 1.1.1 remains the only complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
C-Open is RT-Labs AB's portable CANopen stack for embedded/industrial devices; CANopen is a CAN-bus higher-layer protocol (CiA 301 object dictionary model plus CiA 305 LSS) widely used in automation, motion control and medical/industrial hardware. The root cause is CWE-476 (NULL pointer dereference) in the LSS handling path: when LSS is used to configure a device, the stack reads object 0x1018 (the CANopen "Identity object"), which is expected to expose subindex 0 as the highest supported subindex plus subindexes 1-3 (vendor ID, product code, revision number, serial number). If a user application defines object 0x1018 with fewer subindexes than required, the lookup returns a NULL entry and the stack dereferences it, faulting the device. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:rt-labs_ab:c-open:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (versions 0 to <1.1.1). The vulnerability is reachable over the CAN bus only: the CVSS vector shows AV:A with PR:N and UI:N, i.e. an adjacent-network, unauthenticated, zero-interaction trigger once the attacker can transmit LSS frames, with availability impact scored High and confidentiality/integrity impact None. Because the flaw depends on a non-default identity-object configuration, a stock/correctly configured object dictionary is not affected.

4DescriptionCVE.org
RT-Labs AB C-Open CANopen contains a NULL pointer dereference if the LSS protocol is used to configure the device. An object defined by the user application may not have all required subindexes for object 0x1018. An unauthenticated, remote attacker with access to the CAN bus, through a compromised node for instance, can initiate the LSS protocol on a device with a misconfigured identity object and potentially crash the device. Fixed in 1.1.1.
Executive ViewAI
RT-Labs AB C-Open deployments on CANopen-connected devices face a high-severity availability risk that can crash affected nodes, potentially interrupting industrial or embedded operations until a reset. Leadership should care because remediation is straightforward-upgrade to C-Open 1.1.1-but exploitation requires adjacent CAN bus access plus a non-default identity object misconfiguration, so exposure is concentrated in environments with weak physical or bus segmentation and custom node configurations.
