DescriptionCVE.org

openssl-encrypt before 1.4.9 fails to redact the file password in its --debug argv dump when the password is supplied via bundled short-option spellings (e.g. -apHunter2) or abbreviated long-option spellings (e.g. --passw). The sanitizer only recognized exact option names, --option=value forms, and tokens starting with -p, so these spellings bypass the redaction chokepoint and the cleartext password is written to stderr. Anyone with access to that output (terminal scrollback, merged 2>&1 output, CI job logs, or the GUI's persistent debug log) can recover the password.

AnalysisAI

Cleartext password leakage in openssl-encrypt before 1.4.9 exposes file encryption credentials in debug output when passwords are supplied via bundled short-option or abbreviated long-option argument forms. The tool's sanitizer, which is designed to redact sensitive arguments before writing the argv dump to stderr, fails to recognize spellings like -apHunter2 (bundled short option) or --passw (abbreviated long option), causing the raw password to appear in terminal scrollback, CI job logs, and persistent GUI debug logs. …

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Target runs openssl-encrypt --debug with bundled/abbreviated password arg
Delivery
Sanitizer fails to match non-canonical argument form
Exploit
Cleartext password written to stderr debug dump
Execution
Debug output captured in CI log or persistent log file
Persist
Attacker reads log without special privileges
Impact
Attacker recovers cleartext encryption password

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Two conditions must both be true for exploitation: (1) the user invokes openssl-encrypt with the --debug flag enabled, and (2) the file password is supplied via a bundled short-option spelling (e.g., -apPassword, where the password immediately follows -p without a space as part of a bundled option token) or an abbreviated long-option spelling (e.g., --passw=Password or --pass=Password accepted as prefixes of --password). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H) reflects the scenario in which debug output is aggregated into network-accessible logs - most critically, public CI pipeline job logs where any internet user can read the output without authentication. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker monitoring the public job logs of a GitHub Actions pipeline sees that openssl-encrypt is invoked with --debug and the argument -apS3cr3tKey (a bundled short-option supplying the password inline). Because the sanitizer does not recognize this form, the string S3cr3tKey appears in cleartext in the stderr debug dump captured in the log. …
Remediation Upgrade to openssl-encrypt version 1.4.9 or later, which addresses the sanitizer gap per GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-jgvm-7jxv-cgcc (https://github.com/jahlives/openssl_encrypt/security/advisories/GHSA-jgvm-7jxv-cgcc). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours: audit systems running openssl-encrypt before 1.4.9 to identify deployment scope and immediately disable debug logging modes; perform forensic review of debug logs, CI job logs, and GUI debug logs for password leakage and rotate all encryption credentials that may be exposed. …
