DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/smc: bound the peer rkey counts in SMC-Rv2 LLC messages

On a link whose device has max_recv_sge == 1 there is no shared v2 receive buffer, and smc_llc_save_add_link_rkeys() takes the v2 extension from 44 bytes past the start of the queue entry's inline message:

ext = (struct smc_llc_msg_add_link_v2_ext *)(llc_msg + SMC_WR_TX_SIZE);

The entry is a 72-byte allocation and the extension starts at offset 68, so ext->num_rkeys at offset 94 is already past it. This happens on every SMC-Rv2 link addition, whatever the peer sends:

AnalysisAI

Out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel's SMC-Rv2 (Shared Memory Communications over RDMA v2) LLC handling occurs in smc_llc_save_add_link_rkeys(), where the peer rkey count is read from offset 94 of a 72-byte 'ADD LINK' message allocation whenever the RDMA device reports max_recv_sge == 1 and no shared v2 receive buffer exists. Any peer that initiates an SMC-Rv2 link addition triggers the over-read on every link addition, regardless of message contents, as demonstrated by a reproducible KASAN slab-out-of-bounds report. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires the target to use SMC-R over RDMA (RoCE/InfiniBand) with SMC-Rv2 enabled AND an RDMA device that reports max_recv_sge == 1 so that no shared v2 receive buffer is allocated; under those conditions the over-read fires on every SMC-Rv2 link addition triggered by a peer, without authentication or user interaction. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The supplied CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 9.8) substantially overstates the real impact: the described defect is a small (2-byte) out-of-bounds READ, which realistically yields kernel memory disclosure and/or a crash (denial of service via KASAN panic or a follow-on larger over-read), not the full confidentiality-plus-integrity-plus-availability compromise a 9.8 implies - there is no write primitive or code-execution path in the description. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: update to Linux 6.18.50, 7.2.4, or 7.3-rc1 (or later), or apply the upstream stable fix commits 486c699a8cde82c1d9b4f443eeab4ddf86358cb0 / 5e5d9e6df677d30a2203d257b5fd8b99814fa607 / 2d1e7c5aaa3326e95e2058457f172ca99a9a4577 from git.kernel.org, and take the corresponding Debian/Ubuntu kernel security update as it ships. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
