DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

i2c: imx: Fix slave registration race and error handling

In i2c_imx_reg_slave(), the slave pointer was assigned before pm_runtime_resume_and_get(). If pm_runtime_resume_and_get() failed, the error path returned without clearing i2c_imx->slave, leaving it non-NULL and causing all subsequent registration attempts to fail with -EBUSY.

Additionally, because this driver uses a shared IRQ, the interrupt handler i2c_imx_isr() can execute concurrently and, after acquiring slave_lock, dereference i2c_imx->slave. The previous fix attempt added a lockless i2c_imx->slave = NULL on the error path, but that could race with the ISR under the lock and still cause a NULL pointer dereference.

Fix both issues by deferring the assignment of i2c_imx->slave and i2c_imx->last_slave_event to after a successful resume, and by performing the assignment inside the slave_lock critical section. This guarantees that the slave pointer is never left stale on the error path and is always valid when observed by the interrupt handler.

AnalysisAI

Race condition and error-handling flaws in the i2c-imx I2C controller driver allow a NULL pointer dereference via the kernel interrupt handler on NXP i.MX SoC-based systems. The vulnerability affects multiple stable kernel branches (5.15 through 7.x) and is triggered when I2C slave registration fails partway through a PM runtime resume, leaving a stale or NULL pointer that the shared IRQ handler can dereference concurrently. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires: (1) hardware running an NXP i.MX SoC with the i2c-imx kernel driver loaded, (2) the I2C controller configured or used in slave/target mode so that i2c_imx_reg_slave() is invocable, (3) local access sufficient to trigger slave registration (access to the I2C device node), and (4) a concurrent timing condition where pm_runtime_resume_and_get() fails simultaneously with the shared IRQ handler executing - this is a race condition that is not reliably triggerable on demand. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The NVD CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, score 8.4) deserves critical examination. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade the Linux kernel to a patched stable release: 5.15.217 or later on the 5.15 branch, 6.1.183 or later on 6.1, 6.6.151 or later on 6.6, 6.12.103 or later on 6.12, 7.1.8 or later on 7.1, or 7.2 or later on mainline. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
