DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

batman-adv: dat: ensure accessible eth_hdr proto field

When batadv_get_vid() accesses the proto field of the ethernet header, it is not checking if the data itself is accessible. The caller is responsible for it. But in contrast to other call sites, batadv_dat_get_vid() and its caller didn't make sure this is true. This could have caused an out-of-bounds access.

AnalysisAI

Out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel's batman-adv (B.A.T.M.A.N. Advanced) mesh networking subsystem exposes adjacent-network attackers to kernel memory disclosure and system crash. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires: (1) the batman-adv kernel module to be loaded on the target system - this is not loaded by default in standard Linux distributions and must be explicitly configured for mesh networking; (2) the DAT (Distributed ARP Table) feature of batman-adv to be active, which is its default state when the module is loaded; (3) the attacker to be on the same Layer 2 network segment or batman-adv mesh domain as the target, as the CVSS AV:A vector confirms - remote internet-based exploitation is not possible. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 8.1 score with AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H correctly reflects the adjacent-network attack vector and high dual impact (confidentiality and availability), but must be contextualized. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation The primary fix is to upgrade to a patched Linux kernel stable release: 7.2, 7.1.5, 6.18.40, 6.12.97, 6.6.145, 6.1.178, 5.15.212, or 5.10.261, as applicable to your branch. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours: audit Linux systems for batman-adv kernel module presence (check dmesg and /proc/modules). …
