DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ntfs3: fix out-of-bounds read in decompress_lznt

decompress_lznt() does not validate array index bounds before accessing the decompression table. A corrupted NTFS3 image with invalid compressed data can trigger an out-of-bounds read.

Add index bounds checking to prevent the OOB access.

AnalysisAI

Out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel's ntfs3 LZNT decompression handler allows a local attacker with low privileges to trigger kernel memory access violations by mounting a specially crafted NTFS3 filesystem image. Affected stable branches span 5.15 through 7.x, with patched releases available across all branches. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The ntfs3 kernel module must be present and loadable on the target system (it is included and auto-loaded by default in most modern Linux distributions). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 7.8 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) is internally consistent: local access with low privileges is required to mount a filesystem, and kernel-context exploitation carries full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Update to the appropriate patched stable kernel release: 5.15.212 for the 5.15 LTS branch, 6.1.178 for the 6.1 LTS branch, 6.6.145 for the 6.6 LTS branch, 6.12.97 for the 6.12 branch, 6.18.40 for the 6.18 branch, or 7.1.5 and 7.2 for the mainline 7.x series. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all Linux systems running kernel versions 5.15 through 7.x, particularly those configured with NTFS3 filesystem support, to establish remediation scope. …
