MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Credential Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a deployed Apache Camel AS2 receiver (camel-as2) that accepts inbound AS2 messages and processes asynchronous MDN requests; the attacker sets the async MDN return address in the inbound message and Camel uses it verbatim as the outbound destination. Full confidentiality impact (credential disclosure) additionally requires MDN-delivery credentials to be configured (mdnUserName/mdnPassword/mdnAccessToken); without them the impact is limited to SSRF and internal network reachability. Limiting factors: the attacker must be able to deliver an AS2 message to the receiver and reach its endpoint, and the outbound SSRF target is reachable only from the Camel instance's network position. Signature verification is not a barrier to the SSRF itself. |
| Impact | This is a credible, upgrade-worthy issue rather than a high-CVSS-but-low-risk artifact, but its real-world urgency is moderated by deployment specifics. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N, base 8.2) describes a remote, low-complexity, unauthenticated SSRF with high confidentiality impact - the impact being that MDN-delivery credentials and internal-only hosts are exposed to an attacker-chosen destination (CWE-918). No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the intelligence, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis; the signals therefore do not point to active or widespread exploitation. The PR:N rating is consistent with AS2 receivers that accept inbound partner messages without protocol-level authentication, but note the CVSS vector implies any remote sender can trigger it while the description frames the actor as 'a remote partner' - in practice exploitability depends on whether the receiver accepts messages from the attacker and whether async MDN with credentials is configured. The highest concrete harm (credential theft) is conditional on mdnUserName/mdnPassword/mdnAccessToken being set, so environments without MDN-delivery credentials face SSRF/internal-reachability impact only. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can send an AS2 message to a vulnerable Camel receiver requests an asynchronous Message Disposition Notification and supplies a return address pointing at an internal service (e.g. a cloud metadata endpoint or an internal admin host). Camel connects outbound to that attacker-chosen destination to deliver the MDN, and if MDN-delivery credentials are configured it presents them to the attacker's host. No public exploit code was identified, but the attack is low-complexity and requires no authentication per the CVSS vector. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Unauthenticated remote AS2 partners can turn an Apache Camel camel-as2 receiver into a server-side request forgery pivot: the component reads the asynchronous Message Disposition Notification (MDN) return address out of the inbound message and dials it verbatim, so the sender chooses the host the Camel instance connects to, including addresses only routable from inside the deployment's network. Deployments running Apache Camel 4.0.0 through 4.18.4 or 4.19.0 through 4.22.0 with an exposed camel-as2 receiver are affected; where mdnUserName, mdnPassword or mdnAccessToken are configured, the outbound receipt presents those MDN-delivery credentials to the attacker-chosen destination, which drives the high confidentiality component of the CVSS 3.1 score of 8.2 (CWE-918). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and vendor fixes are released in 4.23.0, 4.18.5 and 4.22.1; real-world urgency is moderated by whether the receiver is reachable by untrusted partners and whether credentials are attached to MDN delivery.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0; deployments on the 4.18.x LTS stream should move to 4.18.5 and those on the 4.22.x stream to 4.22.1, which constrain the asynchronous MDN destination rather than accepting it verbatim (fixes tracked in https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25637, https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25763 and https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25764, advisory https://camel.apache.org/security/CVE-2026-80344.html). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, two compensating controls apply together: restrict outbound egress from the AS2 receiver host to the specific partner endpoints it legitimately delivers receipts to - accepting that new partners or changed partner addresses require firewall updates and that MDN delivery failures will surface as stalled AS2 transactions - and avoid attaching mdnUserName, mdnPassword or mdnAccessToken credentials that are valid for any host beyond those partners, since the receipt is delivered to a sender-controlled destination; removing those credentials eliminates the credential-disclosure impact but breaks authenticated MDN delivery to partners that require it. Where feasible, also limit which remote systems can reach the AS2 receiver endpoint and consider enabling strict inbound signature verification with a configured validateSigningCertificateChain to reject messages from unverified senders, though this does not by itself block the SSRF path.

Technical ContextAI · show details
AS2 (RFC 4130) is the B2B EDI-over-HTTP protocol used to exchange business documents with trading partners, and its Message Disposition Notification is the signed receipt proving delivery; an inbound message can request that this receipt be returned asynchronously via a Receipt-Delivery-Option style address rather than on the original HTTP response. The camel-as2 component took that sender-supplied address from the inbound message and used it directly as the destination for the outgoing asynchronous MDN, with no check that the host matched a configured partner endpoint - the classic CWE-918 server-side request forgery pattern of trusting a client-controlled URL for a server-initiated connection. Because the connection originates from the Camel runtime, the attacker inherits its network position and can probe internal-only hosts, and because camel-as2 exposes dedicated secret configuration parameters for MDN delivery (mdnUserName, mdnPassword and mdnAccessToken, visible as secret-flagged options in the component catalog), any credentials bound to those options travel with the forged request to the attacker's host. The affected artifact is cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_camel, with the defect confined to the camel-as2 component; the upstream fix constrains the asynchronous MDN destination instead of accepting it verbatim, and the referenced pull requests also touch the generated AS2 component catalog metadata. Note that inbound signature verification is orthogonal to the flaw - an unverifiable or unsigned message can still reach the SSRF path unless the deployment enforces the signatureVerificationRequired option.

DescriptionCVE.org
Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in Apache Camel AS2 component.
This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.
In the AS2 protocol the sender of a message may request that the Message Disposition Notification be returned asynchronously to an address the sender supplies. camel-as2 took that address from the inbound message and used it as the destination for the outgoing receipt without constraining it to anything the deployment had configured. A remote partner therefore chose the host the Camel instance would connect to when delivering the MDN. That gives server-side request forgery from the position of the AS2 receiver, including reaching hosts that are only routable from inside the deployment's network, and where the outbound connection carries credentials configured for MDN delivery those credentials are presented to the attacker-chosen destination.
Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. The asynchronous MDN destination is now constrained rather than taken verbatim from the inbound message. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, restrict outbound connectivity from the AS2 receiver to the partner endpoints it legitimately delivers receipts to, and do not attach credentials to MDN delivery that are valid for any host other than those partners.

Executive ViewAI
Apache Camel's camel-as2 receiver exposes organizations that exchange AS2 messages with external partners to server-side request forgery, enabling a sender-controlled MDN return address to redirect the Camel instance toward internal or otherwise unreachable destinations. Leadership should care because affected deployments may leak internal network reachability and configured MDN delivery credentials to an untrusted party; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the risk is concentrated in internet-reachable receivers. Vendor-released patch: 4.23.0, 4.18.5, and 4.22.1.
