Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target to be running Apache Camel in the affected ranges (4.11.0 before 4.18.5, or 4.19.0 before 4.22.1) with the camel-oauth component used to guard a route - specifically the OAuthBearerTokenProcessor or OAuthCodeFlow processors protecting an HTTP-reachable endpoint. No credentials, user interaction, or non-default configuration on the caller's side is needed; the fail-open path triggers on the ordinary request path when authentication cannot be completed (missing Authorization header, non-bearer header, invalid token, or missing authorization code). The only real limiting factor is that the deployment must actually use camel-oauth route guarding rather than an external/explicit authorization check; deployments without the camel-oauth component or with a separate post-OAuth authorization step are not exposed.

Impact

This is a genuine high-priority issue, not an inflated high-CVSS score. The vendor CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N, 8.2) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw, and the description corroborates it fully: the camel-oauth processors fail open, so an unauthenticated caller on the ordinary request path reaches the protected endpoint with no special configuration or prior access. The CVSS signals and the description are internally consistent, which raises confidence in the severity. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data, so there is currently no evidence of active or at-scale exploitation - exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis', and the risk is driven by exploitability and impact rather than observed attacks. The source-code evidence (PRs 25567/25575/25576 adding setRouteStop(true) and fail-closed reject/rejectUnauthorized handling, plus a dedicated fail-closed test) confirms the root cause and that a patch exists, making this a real priority for any deployment using camel-oauth to guard routes. One caveat: the vendor rated impact C:H/I:L/A:N and scope Unchanged, but actual impact depends entirely on what the protected route exposes, so real-world severity could be higher or lower per deployment - verify against your own route behavior.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker sends an ordinary HTTP request to a Camel route configured to require OAuth, either omitting the Authorization header or supplying a non-bearer/invalid credential. Because the guarding processor fails open instead of stopping the exchange, the request falls through to the protected endpoint and is processed as if authentication had succeeded. Given AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, this requires no authentication, no user interaction, and only a single crafted request; no public exploit code is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

Apache Camel's camel-oauth route guards fail open: when authentication cannot be completed, the OAuthBearerTokenProcessor and OAuthCodeFlow processors set an error status and body but never stop the exchange, so the request falls through and continues into the protected part of the route as if the caller had authenticated. Camel 4.11.0 through 4.18.4 and 4.19.0 through 4.22.0 are affected wherever camel-oauth is used to protect an HTTP-reachable endpoint, and exploitation needs no credentials, user interaction, or special configuration - simply omitting the Authorization header, sending a non-Bearer header, presenting an invalid token, or arriving without an authorization code is enough (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N, 8.2). The gap is a confidentiality problem first and foremost, exposing whatever the protected route returns, with limited integrity impact; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the vendor-released patch is 4.23.0, with backports in 4.18.5 and 4.22.1.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, or to 4.18.5 if you track the 4.18.x LTS stream, or to 4.22.1 if you track the 4.22.x LTS stream; the fix is carried by apache/camel PRs 25567, 25575, and 25576 (advisory: https://camel.apache.org/security/CVE-2026-80312.html, issue: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CAMEL-24411). Because patched processors reject with 401 plus WWW-Authenticate: Bearer and halt the exchange, clients that were silently riding the fail-open path will start receiving 401s after the upgrade - verify downstream consumers handle the challenge before rolling to production. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, add an explicit authorization step after the OAuth processor instead of relying on it to terminate the exchange: for example a choice/filter that rejects any exchange lacking the authenticated principal or SecurityContext (returning 401 and setting routeStop), with the trade-off that the check now lives in every protected route and will drift from the component unless it is centralised in a shared route template or applied via an intercept strategy. Alternatively, remove camel-oauth from the route and enforce authentication at an upstream gateway or reverse proxy so requests reach Camel already authorised - faster to deploy at scale, but it shifts the trust boundary and requires the gateway to be the sole network path to the route; neither workaround changes the fact that the vulnerable component remains present, so track the upgrade to completion.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Apache Camel routes are built on the Exchange/Processor model: a Processor receives an Exchange, mutates its message, and returns, after which the route continues to the next step unless the exchange is explicitly halted. In camel-oauth, the processors responsible for enforcing an OAuth 2.0 session (OAuthBearerTokenProcessor for bearer-token protected routes and OAuthCodeFlowProcessor/OAuthCodeFlowCallback for the authorization-code flow) were written to write a status code and body on failure but not to call exchange.setRouteStop(true). Under CWE-287 (Improper Authentication), the guard therefore behaved as a best-effort filter rather than a terminating gate, and control returned to the route - a classic fail-open pattern in which the negative path is weaker than the positive path. The upstream fix (apache/camel PRs 25567, 25575, 25576) introduces a reject()/rejectUnauthorized() helper in AbstractOAuthProcessor that sets HTTP_RESPONSE_CODE, sets the body, and calls exchange.setRouteStop(true); it also corrects the bearer-token rejection to return 401 with a WWW-Authenticate: Bearer challenge per RFC 6750 instead of the previous 400, adds route-stop to the code-flow redirect path so the redirect is the whole response, and ships a dedicated OAuthProcessorFailClosedTest covering the pre-identity-provider failure branches (missing header, non-Bearer scheme, missing authorization code).

DescriptionCVE.org

Improper Authentication vulnerability in Apache Camel OAuth component.

This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.11.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.

The camel-oauth processors that guard a route did not stop the exchange when authentication could not be completed. Where a failure to establish an authenticated session should have terminated routing and returned an error to the caller, the processors fell through and returned control to the route, so the request continued to the protected endpoint as though authentication had succeeded. The effect is a fail-open authentication guard: an unauthenticated caller reached whatever the route did next. The condition is reached on the ordinary request path of a route configured to require OAuth, and needs no special configuration or prior access on the caller's part.

Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. The processors now stop the exchange and set the appropriate error status whenever an authenticated session cannot be established, so a failed authentication no longer reaches the protected part of the route. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, place an explicit authorization check after the OAuth processor rather than relying on it to halt the exchange, and verify that the route stops on failure.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Apache Camel's camel-oauth component, which integration teams rely on to gate HTTP-reachable routes, fails open: when authentication cannot be completed the request is never stopped and continues into the protected portion of the route as if the caller had authenticated. Because no credentials, user interaction, or special configuration are required, any internet-reachable Camel integration running an affected release should be treated as potentially serving protected content to anonymous callers. Leadership should care because the exposure is silent - callers are never blocked and no alert is raised - and the primary consequence is disclosure of whatever data those protected routes return.
