| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated OTRS administrator account with access to the SendSupportBundle functionality in the admin interface; this is the core prerequisite. Exploitation is bounded by operating-system file permissions, which are NOT bypassed: on versions prior to OTRS 7 the deletable files are limited to those writable by the web server process, while on OTRS 7 and later they are limited to those accessible to the dedicated OTRS user - so overly permissive file ownership/permissions widen the blast radius. The primary demonstrated impact is deletion of files outside the intended directory; direct disclosure of arbitrary files to the attacker was not demonstrated because support bundles are delivered only to a predefined OTRS support address. Limiting factors for defenders: mandatory admin authentication, no bypass of OS permissions, and impact scoped to files accessible to the OTRS application process. |
| Impact | This is a high-CVSS (8.7) issue whose real-world risk is meaningfully constrained by its prerequisites. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:H/A:H) confirms network reachability and low complexity, but PR:H means a valid OTRS administrator account is mandatory - this is the single largest mitigating factor and downgrades the practical threat from 'internet-wide mass exploitation' to 'abuse by a malicious or compromised admin.' No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the intelligence, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or widespread automated weaponization; the only source is the vendor's own security advisory (OTRS-SA-2026-12). Note a signal tension worth flagging: the vendor vector sets C:N (no confidentiality impact), yet the description states the bundle 'may additionally attempt to include controlled files' - the vendor resolves this by noting disclosure goes only to a predefined OTRS support address and arbitrary-file disclosure to the attacker was 'not demonstrated,' which justifies C:N but should be verified if your threat model includes a malicious support-channel recipient. Overall this is a defense-in-depth / insider-abuse priority rather than an emergency internet-facing patch, though admin accounts are frequently obtained via phishing or credential reuse, so it should not be dismissed. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained OTRS administrator credentials (e.g., via phishing, reused passwords, or a rogue insider) logs into the admin interface and invokes the SendSupportBundle feature, supplying a crafted path containing directory-traversal sequences. Because low attack complexity and no user interaction are required, the attacker can reliably delete files outside the intended directory that are writable by the OTRS process, potentially disrupting the application or host. No public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis; the issue is documented only in the vendor advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Path traversal in the OTRS SendSupportBundle functionality allows an authenticated administrator to delete files outside the intended directory, limited by the operating system permissions of the OTRS application process. The issue affects OTRS versions 7.0.X through 2026.X before 2026.7.X, as well as ((OTRS)) Community Edition 6.x and earlier; products based on Community Edition are likely affected. Despite a high CVSS score of 8.7, exploitation requires a valid administrative account and does not bypass OS file permissions, and no public exploit has been identified.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to OTRS 2026.7.X or later, which contains the vendor-released patch for this issue. For older branches (7.0.X, 8.0.X, 2023.X, 2024.X, 2025.X) and ((OTRS)) Community Edition 6.x, no fixed version is listed, so migration to a supported release is recommended. As a compensating control, restrict administrative access to the SendSupportBundle functionality to trusted users and ensure that the OTRS application process runs with the least privileges necessary, limiting write access to only required directories. However, overly restrictive permissions may disrupt normal OTRS operation, so test changes carefully. Refer to the vendor advisory at https://otrs.com/release-notes/otrs-security-advisory-2026-12/ for additional guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details
This is a path traversal (CWE-22) vulnerability in the OTRS helpdesk/ticketing system's SendSupportBundle administrative feature, which is designed to collect diagnostic files into a bundle for OTRS support. By supplying crafted file paths, an authenticated administrator can reference locations outside the intended directory, leading to deletion of files accessible to the OTRS process. The impact is bounded by OS permissions: on versions prior to OTRS 7, the web server process permissions apply; from OTRS 7 onward, the dedicated OTRS user's permissions apply. Overly permissive file ownership or filesystem permissions can widen the blast radius. While the vulnerability may also attempt to include controlled files in the support bundle, direct disclosure to the attacker is not demonstrated because bundles are sent only to a predefined OTRS support address. The CPE entries cover both OTRS and ((OTRS)) Community Edition.

DescriptionCVE.org
A path traversal vulnerability in the OTRS SendSupportBundle functionality allows an authenticated administrator to reference file paths outside the intended directory.
This may allow files accessible to the OTRS application process to be deleted. The vulnerability does not bypass operating system file permissions. On OTRS versions prior to OTRS 7, the effective permissions of the web server process are relevant. Starting with OTRS 7, access is limited by the permissions of the dedicated OTRS user. Files with overly permissive ownership or file system permissions may therefore also be affected.
The affected functionality may additionally attempt to include controlled files in a support bundle. However, support bundles are sent to a predefined OTRS support address, and direct disclosure of arbitrary files to the attacker has not been demonstrated.
An attacker therefore requires valid administrative access to exploit the vulnerable functionality. The primary demonstrated impact is the deletion of files outside the intended directory within the effective permissions of the OTRS application process.
This issue affects OTRS:
- 7.0.X
- 8.0.X
- 2023.X
- 2024.X
- 2025.X
- 2026.X before 2026.7.X
Please note that ((OTRS)) Community Edition 6.x and before are vulnerable. Products based on the ((OTRS)) Community Edition also very likely to be affected
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity path traversal flaw in the OTRS SendSupportBundle function (CVE-2026-78355) allows an actor holding an administrative OTRS account to delete files outside the intended directory, with the reach of that deletion bounded only by the operating system permissions granted to the OTRS application process. Organizations running OTRS 7.0.X through 2026.X (before 2026.7.X), ((OTRS)) Community Edition 6.x and earlier, or products derived from Community Edition are exposed, and the absence of a vendor-released patch means the risk cannot be closed through routine maintenance alone. Leadership should care because a single privileged account is enough to cause destructive data loss on the OTRS host, potentially disrupting ticketing operations and any data or filesystem resources reachable by the service account.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict and review all administrative OTRS accounts (disable dormant accounts, enforce MFA); run the OTRS application process under a dedicated least-privilege OS account confined to its own directories; enable filesystem auditing and alerting on unexpected file deletions; apply WAF/reverse-proxy filtering for path traversal patterns in SendSupportBundle requests; and maintain offline, tested backups of OTRS data and configuration to support recovery from destructive deletion.
