MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a bRPC server at version <= 1.17.0 that accepts HTTP/2 (h2) or gRPC traffic on a port reachable from an untrusted network; per the advisory the h2 parser is enabled by default on every bRPC server port and executes before any Authenticator check, so no authentication, user interaction, or non-default configuration is needed to reach the vulnerable receive path. bRPC h2/gRPC clients connecting to an untrusted backend are also affected. The practical limiting factors are: the target must be running an affected version and actually serving/parsing h2 traffic, and the impact is confined to denial of service (crash or memory exhaustion) with no data exposure or code execution. The vendor advisory explicitly characterizes the attacker as remote and unauthenticated, but because no CVSS vector was provided in the input, that privilege level is not independently confirmed from structured data. |
| Impact | No CVSS vector or score is provided in the input (both N/A), so attack vector and privilege metrics are inferred from the vendor advisory text rather than confirmed by NVD. EPSS is unavailable, the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code was identified - so all three exploitation-likelihood signals are either absent or negative. Against those weak signals, the architectural facts raise genuine concern: the Apache advisory states the h2 parser is enabled by default on every bRPC server port and runs before any Authenticator check, meaning a remote unauthenticated attacker can reach the vulnerable code path on default configurations. However, the technical impact is availability-only (process crash via CHECK abort / NULL deref, or unbounded memory growth / OOM) - there is no confidentiality or integrity impact and no code execution, so this is a denial-of-service bug, not a system-compromise bug. Net assessment: a real patching priority for internet- or untrusted-network-exposed bRPC h2/gRPC services because exploitation is pre-auth and low-complexity, but the ceiling is DoS, and the absence of EPSS/KEV/POC suggests no evidence of active exploitation at time of analysis. Note the advisory text at the top of the input (33-byte minimum entry / 121 AddHeader / PR #3462) describes CVE-2026-78048 and bleeds into this record; the authoritative CVE-2026-78058 content is the HTTP/2 receive-path advisory (PR #3474) - verify scoping against the vendor advisory. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach a bRPC server's port (h2/gRPC enabled by default) opens an HTTP/2 connection and, without authenticating, sends crafted frames - for example a 1-byte-indexed HPACK 'bomb' amplifying a tiny HEADERS frame ~4000x, an unbounded number of pending streams, or a dynamic-table-size update that desynchronizes the decoder. The server either allocates memory without bound until it is OOM-killed or hits an internal CHECK/NULL-dereference and aborts, taking the service down. No public exploit code was identified, but the advisory describes the trigger mechanics in enough detail to reproduce. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026
Remote denial of service in Apache bRPC through 1.17.0 allows attackers to crash servers or exhaust memory by sending crafted HTTP/2 (h2) frames to the default-enabled h2 parser, which processes peer-controlled stream and header metadata before authentication. The vendor advisory describes remote unauthenticated exploitation; the assessed impact is availability-only (CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H). No public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Apache bRPC 1.18.0. Upgrade to 1.18.0, or apply https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3474. After the fix, defaults enforce max_concurrent_streams at 1024 per connection (4294967295 restores unlimited) and max_header_list_size at 1 MiB decoded per stream (4294967295 restores unlimited; -h2_client_max_header_list_size for clients), and h2 control-frame acks respect -socket_max_unwritten_bytes (-h2_ack_ignore_eovercrowded restores the old behavior); requests exceeding these limits are rejected with RST_STREAM(REFUSED_STREAM) or a connection error. If immediate upgrade or patching is not possible, restrict h2/gRPC ports to trusted networks with firewall/network policy, front bRPC with a proxy that enforces HTTP/2 stream and header-list limits, and monitor connection memory and stream counts; these compensating controls reduce exposure but do not fix the unchecked receive-path limits. Advisory: https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2026/q4/274 and https://github.com/apache/brpc.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Apache bRPC's HTTP/2 (h2) receive path decodes peer-supplied frames and HPACK header blocks before any application-level Authenticator check, and the advisory states it is enabled by default on every server port. The implementation failed to enforce limits it advertised or should have applied: SETTINGS_MAX_CONCURRENT_STREAMS was unlimited and not checked, allowing unbounded pending streams per connection; SETTINGS_MAX_HEADER_LIST_SIZE was unlimited and not enforced, enabling HPACK indexed-reference amplification (a small HEADERS frame expanding to a large decoded header list) and accumulation from never-completed HEADERS/CONTINUATION blocks; control-frame acknowledgements bypassed -socket_max_unwritten_bytes so a PING flood with withheld TCP reads grew connection buffers; and HPACK dynamic-table size updates were validated against the protocol default 4096 rather than the advertised SETTINGS_HEADER_TABLE_SIZE, which with dynamic-table queue/accounting problems could desynchronize the decoder and cause a NULL dereference. The root cause class is uncontrolled resource consumption from missing enforcement of protocol limits; impact is denial of service, not data disclosure or code execution.

Executive ViewAI
Apache bRPC versions through 1.17.0 contain a critical remote denial-of-service condition in the default-enabled HTTP/2 parser that can crash servers or exhaust memory before authentication. Organizations running bRPC-based services, especially externally reachable APIs, face availability disruption and potential service outages that warrant management attention despite no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
No vendor-released patch identified; disable or restrict the default-enabled HTTP/2 (h2) parser where feasible, limit network exposure of bRPC services to trusted clients, enforce connection and rate limits, and monitor for crashes or memory exhaustion.
