Network JSON-RPC endpoint (AV:N), low complexity, requires only a valid session so PR:L (open-source floor), no user interaction; shell runs as service user with Redis/bucket creds giving full C/I/A:H.

OpenC3 COSMOS provides the functionality needed to send commands to and receive data from one or more embedded systems. From 5.12.0 until 7.3.0, an authenticated actor can write the pypi_url setting through set_setting at POST /openc3-api/api, then cause OpenC3::PluginModel.install_phase2 in openc3/lib/openc3/models/plugin_model.rb to interpolate the value into a shell command while installing a plugin with Python dependency metadata. Shell metacharacters in the setting are interpreted by the command shell, allowing arbitrary operating-system commands to run as the openc3 service user with access to Redis and bucket credentials. Open-source deployments permit any authenticated user to reach the affected operations, while Enterprise deployments require an administrator. This issue is fixed in version 7.3.0.

AnalysisAI
Authenticated OS command injection in OpenC3 COSMOS 5.12.0 through 7.2.1 allows a user with a valid session to run arbitrary operating-system commands as the openc3 service user by writing shell metacharacters into the pypi_url setting and then installing a plugin that carries Python dependency metadata. The injected value is interpolated into a shell backtick inside PluginModel.install_phase2, so commands execute with access to the service's Redis and bucket storage credentials; in the open-source edition any authenticated user can reach both the setting-write and plugin-install operations, whereas the Enterprise edition requires the administrator role, and the vendor has fixed the issue in 7.3.0. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires a valid authenticated session against the openc3-cosmos-cmd-tlm-api service and the ability to (1) write the pypi_url setting via the set_setting JSON-RPC method and (2) install a plugin whose gem contains a requirements.txt or pyproject.toml so the Python dependency branch of install_phase2 executes. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not high-CVSS inflation. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade OpenC3 COSMOS to version 7.3.0, which is the vendor-released fix; the change (GitHub PR https://github.com/OpenC3/cosmos/pull/3489, commit https://github.com/OpenC3/cosmos/commit/be70d1d836c83c3b084e768e31a399312d4cbe0b) replaces the backtick shell invocation in PluginModel.install_phase2 with Open3.capture2e using an explicit argv array, eliminating shell metacharacter interpretation, and adds a new OpenC3::PypiUrl.validate helper that rejects anything that is not an http(s) URL with a host and falls back to the default index, applied in both plugin_model.rb and python_package_model.rb. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory every OpenC3 COSMOS deployment, identify all instances running 5.12.0 through 7.2.1, restrict network reachability to those instances, and trim the population of users permitted to write the pypi_url setting or install plugins to the minimum necessary set. …
