Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires network reachability to the Kafka Connect REST API; no authentication to that API is required, confirmed by CVSS PR:N. The vulnerability is specifically triggered by the absence of mandatory HTTPS enforcement on HEC endpoint configuration - any connector deployment where the REST API is accessible over the network and HEC endpoint validation permits non-TLS URLs is at risk. Exploitation is constrained by the following factors: (1) the Kafka Connect REST API must be network-reachable by the attacker - deployments where the API is bound to localhost, placed behind an authenticating reverse proxy, or restricted by firewall policy are not directly exploitable via this vector; (2) only Splunk Connect for Kafka versions in the 2.2 branch below 2.2.7 are confirmed affected per available advisory data; (3) the impact on Splunk Enterprise (credential exposure and event-delivery alteration) is a secondary consequence of connector misconfiguration, not a direct exploit of the Splunk Enterprise platform itself.

Impact

The vendor-supplied CVSS 3.1 score of 8.2 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N) accurately captures the unauthenticated, low-friction attack path and high confidentiality impact from credential theft, though the S:U rating may understate the secondary blast radius since stolen HEC tokens provide write access to a distinct system - Splunk Enterprise. EPSS score data was not included in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be numerically quantified. No CISA KEV listing is present and no public exploit code has been identified, indicating opportunistic at-scale exploitation has not been observed, but the attack is mechanically simple enough that even a mid-sized municipal IT team in inowroclaw running this connector stack with an exposed REST API should treat this as a high-priority remediation. The greatest real-world risk compounds beyond the base vector: HEC token compromise enables an attacker to inject fabricated events into Splunk, potentially poisoning SIEM detection data and undermining incident response integrity. Risk is substantially reduced if the Kafka Connect REST API is restricted to trusted management hosts or bound only to localhost.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with network-level access to the Kafka Connect REST API sends a simple unauthenticated HTTP PUT or POST request reconfiguring the HEC sink connector's target URL to an HTTP server they control. The connector immediately begins forwarding all Kafka topic records and the embedded HEC authentication token in cleartext to the attacker's endpoint, granting persistent credential access and a full copy of the data pipeline until the misconfiguration is discovered and corrected.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026

Unauthenticated access to the Kafka Connect REST API in Splunk Connect for Kafka versions below 2.2.7 enables an SSRF-class attack that reconfigures the HTTP Event Collector destination to an attacker-controlled endpoint, resulting in theft of HEC authentication credentials and partial manipulation of event delivery to Splunk Enterprise. The connector's HEC endpoint validation does not enforce secure transport by default, meaning a non-TLS HTTP destination can be substituted without any authentication. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires no privileges and trivially low complexity, making any deployment with a network-exposed Kafka Connect REST API immediately actionable.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Splunk Connect for Kafka to version 2.2.7 or later, the vendor-released patch identified in Splunk advisory SVD-2026-0808 (https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0808); installation guidance is available in the Splunk documentation at the URLs referenced in the CVE. If immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict network access to the Kafka Connect REST API to specific trusted management IP addresses using firewall rules or network segmentation - this directly eliminates the unauthenticated network attack vector, though it may disrupt automated connector management workflows. As a parallel compensating control, configure Splunk Enterprise to enforce HTTPS-only HEC endpoints at the platform level, and rotate any HEC tokens that may have transited the connector if the REST API was previously broadly network-accessible. Audit connector configurations for any unexpected or non-HTTPS HEC destination URLs as an indicator of prior exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Splunk Connect for Kafka (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:splunk:splunk_connect_for_kafka:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a Kafka Connect sink plugin that ingests records from Apache Kafka topics and forwards them to Splunk Enterprise via the HTTP Event Collector (HEC) API. The Kafka Connect framework exposes a REST API for dynamic connector configuration management, which is unauthenticated by default in many deployments. CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery) classifies the root cause: an attacker abuses the connector's REST API to reconfigure the HEC destination URL to point to an attacker-controlled HTTP server. Because the endpoint validation layer does not mandate HTTPS as a transport requirement, the connector will resolve and connect to the substituted destination, transmitting HEC authentication tokens and all in-flight event data in cleartext. The flaw is a validation deficiency in connector configuration handling, not a memory corruption or injection issue in the Kafka processing pipeline.

DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Connect for Kafka versions below 2.2.7, an unauthenticated user who can reach the Kafka Connect Representational State Transfer (REST) API could configure a non-secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Event Collector endpoint in Splunk Enterprise that causes the connector to send authentication credentials to an attacker-controlled server, allowing for exposure of credentials that compromise all relevant data sent through the connector and limited alteration of event delivery. The vulnerability is possible because HTTP Event Collector endpoint validation does not require secure transport by default. Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Splunk Connect for Kafka versions below 2.2.7 allow unauthenticated attackers to reconfigure event destinations and steal HEC authentication credentials through an unsecured REST API, directly compromising both the integrity and confidentiality of event data flowing to Splunk Enterprise. Any organization with network-exposed Kafka Connect infrastructure faces immediate credential exposure and potential loss of visibility into critical event streams.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Until version 2.2.7 is deployed, restrict network access to Kafka Connect REST API endpoints using firewall rules or network segmentation, limiting connections to trusted administrative systems only. Enable audit logging on HEC configuration changes to detect unauthorized destination reconfigurations.
