DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk SOAR versions below 8.6.0, a user who holds the Administrator role could use path traversal in the Universal Forwarder installer's archive extraction to write files outside the intended installation directory. The vulnerability is possible because the Universal Forwarder credentials-package extraction workflow does not verify that each archive member remains within the intended destination before extraction. For more information see Manage roles and permissions in Splunk SOAR (On-premises) (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-soar/soar-on-premises/administer-soar-on-premises/8.5.0/manage-your-splunk-soar-on-premises-users-and-accounts/manage-roles-and-permissions-in-splunk-soar-on-premises) and Configure forwarders to send SOAR data to your Splunk deployment (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-soar/soar-on-premises/administer-soar-on-premises/8.5.0/configure-administration-settings-in-splunk-soar-on-premises/configure-forwarders-to-send-soar-data-to-your-splunk-deployment) in the Splunk documentation.

AnalysisAI

Path traversal in Splunk SOAR's Universal Forwarder credentials-package extraction allows an authenticated Administrator to write files to arbitrary locations on the underlying host filesystem. Affecting all On-premises versions below 8.6.0, the flaw stems from the archive extraction workflow accepting member paths containing directory traversal sequences without first verifying each member's resolved destination. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to hold the Splunk SOAR Administrator role, the highest privilege tier in SOAR On-premises, as confirmed by the CVSS PR:H metric and the vendor's own role documentation. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 score of 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H) accurately reflects the high-privilege prerequisite (Administrator role, PR:H) that materially constrains this vulnerability's external attack surface. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker in possession of Splunk SOAR Administrator credentials crafts a malicious archive containing entries with path traversal sequences - for example, a member named '../../etc/cron.d/persistence' - and submits it through the Universal Forwarder credentials-package workflow. Because the extraction routine does not validate destination paths, the file is written to /etc/cron.d/ on the SOAR host rather than the installation directory, establishing persistent execution under the OS scheduler. …
Remediation Upgrade Splunk SOAR On-premises to version 8.6.0 or later, which remediates the path traversal by enforcing that each extracted archive member's resolved path remains within the intended installation directory. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
