DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, a user who does not hold the "admin" or "power" Splunk roles could create or modify a scripted lookup through generic configuration endpoints and run an installed lookup script with the permissions of the user account running Splunk Enterprise, which could allow for access to all relevant data and affect system integrity and availability. The vulnerability is possible because the generic transforms configuration endpoints do not enforce the capabilities required to create or edit external lookup definitions. For more information see Define roles on the Splunk platform with capabilities (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/manage-users-and-security/10.2/manage-splunk-platform-users-and-roles/define-roles-on-the-splunk-platform-with-capabilities) and limits.conf (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/admin-manual/10.4/configuration-file-reference/10.4.2-configuration-file-reference/limits.conf) in the Splunk documentation.

AnalysisAI

Privilege escalation in Splunk Enterprise allows any authenticated low-privileged user to create or modify scripted lookups through improperly guarded generic transforms configuration endpoints, gaining code execution under the Splunk service account's operating system permissions. Affected versions span four release branches: 9.4.x below 9.4.14, 10.0.x below 10.0.9, 10.2.x below 10.2.6, and 10.4.x below 10.4.2. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The vulnerability requires a valid authenticated Splunk account for a user who does not hold the 'admin' or 'power' Splunk roles - users with those elevated roles already have legitimate scripted lookup creation rights, so this is an authorization bypass specific to lower-privileged accounts. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 8.8 score with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H accurately reflects the real-world severity of this privilege escalation. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker holding any valid low-privileged Splunk account - such as a contractor account, a compromised analyst credential, or an application service account - authenticates to the Splunk REST API and submits a crafted POST request to a generic transforms configuration endpoint to register a scripted lookup pointing to a malicious script file accessible on the host. When any Splunk search triggers that lookup, Splunk executes the script under the OS-level service account, granting the attacker full read access to all indexed data and the ability to affect system integrity and availability. …
Remediation The primary remediation is to upgrade Splunk Enterprise to a patched release: version 9.4.14 for the 9.4 branch, 10.0.9 for the 10.0 branch, 10.2.6 for the 10.2 branch, or 10.4.2 for the 10.4 branch, as specified in vendor advisory SVD-2026-0801 at https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0801. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI
