DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.1, 10.2.5, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, an unauthenticated user who can reach the Splunk management port could store a Search Processing Language (SPL) pipeline that runs when an administrator opens the Add Data forwarder workflow. The SPL pipeline could access all relevant data, affect system integrity, and affect availability of the Splunk platform instance. The SPL injection is possible because Deployment Server client identifiers are placed into dispatched searches without neutralizing special characters. Successful exploitation requires an administrator to open the affected Add Data forwarder workflow after the unauthenticated user registers a crafted Deployment Server client identity. For more information see Forward data (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/get-started/get-data-in/10.2/how-to-get-data-into-your-splunk-deployment/forward-data) and About agent management (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/update-your-deployment/10.4/agent-management/about-agent-management) in the Splunk documentation.

AnalysisAI

Stored SPL injection in Splunk Enterprise allows an unauthenticated attacker who can reach the management port to register a crafted Deployment Server client identity containing malicious Search Processing Language code, which executes when an administrator opens the Add Data forwarder workflow. All four supported major branches are affected (9.4.x, 10.0.x, 10.2.x, 10.4.x), with vendor-confirmed fixes available. …

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Gain network access to Splunk management port TCP 8089
Delivery
Register crafted Deployment Server client identity with embedded SPL payload
Exploit
Malicious SPL stored in Deployment Server configuration

Impact
SPL executes in Splunk search context, accessing all indexed data and platform controls

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Phase one (payload staging) requires network reachability to the Splunk management port (default TCP 8089) and the ability to register a Deployment Server client identity - no authentication is required (PR:N per CVSS vector). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 8.8 score with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H accurately captures the split-phase nature of this attack: the initial payload registration requires no authentication and low complexity, while the detonation phase is gated by an administrator performing a specific UI action. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker with internal network access to port 8089 registers a forwarder identity whose client name contains embedded SPL pipeline syntax, such as pipeline chaining operators or search commands that exfiltrate index data to an external destination. The malicious identity persists on the Deployment Server until an administrator navigates to the Add Data forwarder workflow during routine operations, at which point the unsanitized identifier is interpolated into a dispatched search and executes with the privileges of the Splunk search process. …
Remediation Upgrade to Splunk Enterprise 10.4.1, 10.2.5, 10.0.9, or 9.4.14 for the respective installed branch, as documented in Splunk advisory SVD-2026-0801 at https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0801. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours: Inventory all Splunk Enterprise instances, identify affected versions, and implement network access controls restricting management port (8089) access to authorized systems only. …
