MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to be running SiYuan before v3.7.4 and to actively drag, drop, or paste an attacker-supplied file into the editor - the malicious payload lives in the file's NAME, which must pass through the file-upload validation flow that calls insertAdjacentHTML without escaping. Limiting factors: the attack vector is local (AV:L), so the attacker must first deliver the crafted file to the victim's system or to a location the victim imports from, and passive user interaction (UI:P) is mandatory - the file must be brought into the editor by the user. No authentication to the application is required (PR:N), but there is no remote, no-interaction path; the flaw cannot be triggered against a default install without the victim performing the drag/drop/paste import action. |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 9.3 (critical), vector AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H with a scope change to subsequent systems (SC:H/SI:H/SA:H), reflecting the XSS-to-RCE impact. The local attack vector (AV:L) and passive user interaction (UI:P) are the key mitigating signals: this is not a remote unauthenticated internet drive-by - the attacker must get a maliciously named file to the victim, who must then drag, drop, or paste it into the editor. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV listing were provided, and there is no POC flag in the intelligence, so this reads as high-impact-but-interaction-gated rather than mass-exploited. Weighing the signals together - trivial payload construction, full OS command impact, and a plausible social-engineering delivery path - even a mid-sized municipal IT team in opole should treat this as urgent for any SiYuan deployment, but the risk is realized per-victim on file interaction rather than as automatable, wormable exploitation. Bottom line: a genuine high priority for organizations actually running SiYuan, tempered by the local vector and required user action. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends the victim a file whose filename contains an HTML/script payload (via a shared drive, chat attachment, or synced folder) and social-engineers them into importing it. When the victim drags, drops, or pastes the file into the SiYuan editor, the unescaped filename is injected via insertAdjacentHTML, the script executes in the privileged Electron renderer, and it runs OS commands as the user. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, but the payload is simple to construct given the described flaw. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 18, 2026
Cross-site scripting escalating to full remote code execution in SiYuan, an Electron-based personal knowledge-management and note-taking application, affects all releases before v3.7.4. The file-upload validation flow inserts unescaped filenames into the DOM via insertAdjacentHTML, so a filename carrying a script payload runs in the privileged renderer and reaches OS command execution when a victim drags, drops, or pastes the file into the editor. Reported by VulnCheck and fixed in v3.7.4; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade SiYuan to v3.7.4 or later, which escapes filenames before DOM insertion; this is the primary and recommended fix, per vendor advisory GHSA-jf56-jrhq-j2qp (https://github.com/siyuan-note/siyuan/security/advisories/GHSA-jf56-jrhq-j2qp). Until patched, the practical compensating control is behavioral and workflow-based: instruct users not to drag, drop, or paste files that originate from untrusted sources or that carry suspicious or attacker-controllable filenames, since the trigger is file interaction inside the editor (trade-off: relies on user discipline and disrupts normal note-taking). Where feasible, rename incoming files to sanitized names before importing them into SiYuan, and restrict who can place files into shared or synced workspaces that a SiYuan user might import (trade-off: adds a manual pre-processing step). Given the Electron RCE impact, running the client under a least-privileged OS account limits blast radius but does not prevent code execution. Cite exact fix version v3.7.4 when scheduling the upgrade; do not rely on workarounds as a permanent substitute.

Technical ContextAI · show details
SiYuan is a self-hosted, offline-first note-taking application built on Electron, so its renderer process typically has access to Node.js/OS-level capabilities. The root cause is CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation): during file-upload validation the application constructs an HTML fragment from the user-supplied filename and injects it with insertAdjacentHTML() without HTML-escaping. Because insertAdjacentHTML parses and activates markup, a crafted filename (for example one embedding an <img onerror=...> handler) executes as code in the editor context rather than being rendered as inert text. In an Electron app with node integration or exposed bridges, this DOM XSS escalates from script execution to arbitrary OS command execution. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:siyuan-note:siyuan:*, covering the SiYuan application across platforms.

2DescriptionCVE.org
SiYuan before v3.7.4 contains a cross-site scripting vulnerability in the file upload validation flow that fails to escape filenames before inserting them into HTML via insertAdjacentHTML. Attackers can craft a malicious filename containing script payloads that execute with full OS command access when a user drags, drops, or pastes the file into the editor.
Executive ViewAI
SiYuan versions before v3.7.4 contain a critical remote code execution vulnerability triggered through file-upload handling, allowing arbitrary system command execution when users open or interact with malicious files. All users of affected versions face complete system compromise without patching. Immediate upgrade to v3.7.4 is required to eliminate this exposure.
