DescriptionCVE.org

openssl_encrypt versions before 1.4.0 contain a missing ownership verification vulnerability in the revoke_key method that allows authenticated clients to revoke any other client's key. Attackers can revoke arbitrary keys by providing a valid ML-DSA signature, bypassing the intended ownership restriction.

AnalysisAI

Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) in the openssl_encrypt Python pip package (versions before 1.4.0) allows any authenticated client to revoke another client's cryptographic key without owning it. The keyserver's revoke_key method at lines 195-270 of service.py validates the requester's ML-DSA post-quantum signature but never checks whether the requesting client_id matches the key's owner_client_id - meaning an attacker with valid credentials can target any key in the server by presenting their own legitimate signature against a victim's key ID. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Enroll as legitimate keyserver client
Delivery
Obtain victim client's key ID via enumeration or insider knowledge
Exploit
Craft revoke_key API request targeting victim's key ID
Execution
Provide own valid ML-DSA signature as authorization proof
Persist
Server validates signature (passes) without checking key ownership
Impact
Victim's key revoked, cryptographic access disrupted

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to be an enrolled, authenticated client of the openssl_encrypt keyserver - they must possess valid client credentials and a functioning ML-DSA private key capable of producing a valid signature. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H reflects a high-severity finding: network-reachable, low complexity, requiring only authenticated access. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An authenticated client enrolled in the openssl_encrypt keyserver identifies the key ID of a high-value target client - for example, a service account or administrator - through any available means (API enumeration, leaked logs, or insider knowledge). The attacker then calls the revoke_key endpoint with the victim's key ID and their own valid ML-DSA signature; the server validates the signature as cryptographically sound but proceeds without checking ownership, successfully revoking the victim's key and severing their cryptographic access to dependent services. …
Remediation Upgrade openssl_encrypt to version 1.4.0, which contains commit 05e45f3 on the releases/1.4.x branch. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, audit all systems and dependency manifests to identify installations of openssl_encrypt prior to version 1.4.0 using pip auditing tools and build inventories. …
