Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a local authenticated account with CAP_NET_RAW capability or equivalent access to AF_PACKET sockets, which in some Linux configurations with user namespace support may be accessible without traditional elevated privileges. The vulnerability is triggered specifically during a SOCK_RAW packet_snd() or packet_sendmsg_spkt() call that races concurrently with a device reconfiguration that changes dev->hard_header_len - the canonical example being a bonding interface undergoing a device type change. The attacker must either control the device reconfiguration side of the race or time the attack to coincide with a legitimate reconfiguration event. Systems without bonding interfaces or other runtime-reconfigurable link-layer drivers present a substantially reduced race window. What limits exploitation: the requirement for local shell access, the CAP_NET_RAW capability, the presence of a dynamically reconfigurable network device, and the need to win a TOCTOU timing window. The SOCK_DGRAM consistency issue between hard_header_len and header_ops->create noted in the patch description as out-of-scope is a distinct residual condition not covered by this fix.

Impact

The vendor CVSS 3.1 score of 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) correctly anchors this as a local privilege escalation with high impact, but the AC:L rating warrants scrutiny - winning a TOCTOU race against concurrent device reconfiguration involves specific timing, and an independent assessment of AC:H is defensible unless the attacker can orchestrate both sides of the race unilaterally. The C:H/I:H/A:H impact triad reflects the realistic consequence of a kernel OOB write primitive, which historically provides a reliable path to root. EPSS at 0.16% (5th percentile) and the absence of a CISA KEV listing indicate no current known exploitation, but EPSS frequently lags behind private exploit development for kernel primitives - even a mid-sized municipal IT team in swidnica managing a fleet of multi-tenant Linux servers should treat this as a high-priority patch given how powerful kernel memory corruption primitives are in practice. The SOCK_RAW attack path requires CAP_NET_RAW or equivalent packet socket access, which limits the population of exploitable accounts but is not an unusual capability in containerized or network-administration contexts. The separate SOCK_DGRAM consistency issue noted in the patch description as out-of-scope is a residual risk not addressed by this fix. Patch availability across stable branches (6.6.152, 6.12.104, 6.18.45, 7.1.9, 7.2) makes the remediation path clear.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local attacker with a low-privilege account and access to AF_PACKET sockets opens a SOCK_RAW socket and concurrently triggers bonding device type reconfiguration - either by controlling the bonding configuration themselves or timing alongside a legitimate administrator action - to race packet_snd()'s two reads of dev->hard_header_len. When the race succeeds, skb->data is placed before skb->head, and the attacker's send operation copies attacker-controlled bytes to an out-of-bounds kernel memory region, yielding a write primitive that can be chained via known kernel exploitation techniques to overwrite credentials or function pointers and achieve root. No public proof-of-concept is known at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 25, 2026

Out-of-bounds kernel memory write in the Linux kernel packet socket implementation allows a local low-privilege attacker to corrupt kernel memory by exploiting a race condition between packet_snd() reads of dev->hard_header_len and concurrent device reconfiguration. When the race is won - for example during a bonding device type change - skb->data is positioned before skb->head, and the subsequent userspace copy writes beyond the allocated socket buffer, creating a kernel memory corruption primitive suitable for local privilege escalation. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing exists at time of analysis; EPSS of 0.16% reflects very low current exploitation probability, though the primitive is powerful and patch availability across multiple stable branches makes remediation straightforward.

Upgrade to a patched Linux kernel version: 6.6.152, 6.12.104, 6.18.45, 7.1.9, or 7.2, applying the upstream stable commits available at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/91f041451f967cd87ed722a8f43c0b767a64f1a0, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/9052756290962ffb9a661bcf319e92dedaaedfed, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5bb10753d428aadfc356a2bfe9acea09c82a62ec, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/b06b6fce6d7deaf7238e09b48ce3b1125ff41acd, and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/03390aa32e669cc4ecd7d34108e2e1afc13d689d. Distribution-specific errata from Red Hat, Ubuntu, Debian, and SUSE should be monitored for corresponding package updates. As an interim workaround, restrict AF_PACKET socket creation by removing or constraining CAP_NET_RAW from untrusted users and container runtimes using seccomp profiles or capability dropping - note that this will break raw-socket network diagnostics tools such as tcpdump and Wireshark captures running without privilege, so compensate by routing diagnostic access through privileged helper processes. Additionally, disabling dynamic bonding device type changes in production environments reduces the concurrent reconfiguration window that enables the race, though this may limit network configuration flexibility. Systems without bonding interfaces or equivalent reconfigurable drivers have a substantially smaller race window.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected code resides in the Linux kernel's AF_PACKET socket implementation (net/packet/af_packet.c). When a SOCK_RAW packet socket executes a send, packet_snd() consults dev->hard_header_len to calculate headroom reservation for the socket buffer (skb). Because this field can be modified by concurrent device reconfiguration - such as a bonding driver changing device type and adjusting link-layer header lengths at runtime - a time-of-check/time-of-use (TOCTOU) race exists between the initial reservation calculation and the actual skb allocation. If the first read saves a larger reservation value and the second read returns a smaller allocation value, the subsequent skb->data -= reserve operation moves the data pointer behind skb->head, violating the skb geometry invariants enforced throughout the network stack. The subsequent copy_from_user() then writes attacker-controlled bytes to an out-of-bounds kernel memory region. packet_sendmsg_spkt() carries an analogous flaw across two separate reads bracketing the RCU read lock drop. The fix introduces LL_RESERVED_SPACE_EX() to allow callers that have already latched a header length to pass it through, and enforces a single consistent read of hard_header_len per send operation in both code paths. The CWE is not formally assigned in NVD data, but the root cause class is TOCTOU Race Condition (CWE-362) leading to an Out-of-Bounds Write (CWE-787). CPE: cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

packet: use consistent hard_header_len in non-ring send paths

packet_snd() reads dev->hard_header_len multiple times while allocating and constructing an skb. Device reconfiguration can change this value concurrently, for example through bonding device type changes.

For SOCK_RAW, packet_snd() can save a larger value in reserve and later allocate headroom using a smaller value. Moving skb->data back by reserve then places it before skb->head, and the following copy from userspace can attempt an out-of-bounds write.

packet_sendmsg_spkt() has the same issue because it calculates its reservation and header offset from separate reads before dropping the RCU read lock to allocate the skb.

Add LL_RESERVED_SPACE_EX() for callers that already saved a header length. Read hard_header_len once in packet_snd() and use it for allocation and construction. In packet_sendmsg_spkt(), preserve the allocation-time value through the device lookup retry.

The separate SOCK_DGRAM consistency problem between hard_header_len and header_ops->create is not addressed here.
