Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to be physically within WiFi radio range or logically on the same Layer 2 WiFi segment as the target - internet-based remote exploitation is not possible given the Adjacent network vector. The target must be running a Linux kernel with the ath12k driver loaded and active on Qualcomm 802.11be (WiFi 7) hardware capable of Multi-Link Operation, such as the WCN7850 PCI chipset. No authentication or credentials are required once adjacency is established (CVSS PR:N). Systems without Qualcomm WiFi 7 hardware, or with the ath12k module absent or blacklisted, are entirely unaffected. Kernel security mitigations - SMEP, SMAP, heap randomization, and Control Flow Integrity - increase the complexity of converting the out-of-bounds write into reliable code execution beyond a denial-of-service condition. |
| Impact | The CVSS 8.8 rating with an Adjacent network vector (AV:A) significantly limits the realistic attacker population: exploitation requires physical or logical WiFi proximity, not open internet reachability. EPSS at 0.14% (4th percentile) indicates no observed exploitation telemetry, consistent with the absence of a CISA KEV listing and no known public proof-of-concept code. The memory corruption primitive is nevertheless technically serious: uncontrolled writes adjacent to kernel data structures can theoretically be developed into kernel code execution, though reliability depends heavily on heap layout and kernel hardening mitigations (SMEP, SMAP, heap randomization, CFI). The more immediately reproducible consequence - ML peer ID exhaustion causing denial of multi-link association - requires no sophisticated exploitation. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in radom deploying Linux-based WiFi 7 infrastructure should treat this as a standard patch-cycle priority rather than an emergency, given the absence of observed exploitation and the constrained adjacency requirement. The CVSS vector (AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) is consistent with the description: a WiFi-adjacent device can trigger the cleanup path without credentials, and the low complexity reflects that no special preconditions beyond adjacency are required. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker within WiFi radio range of a device running a vulnerable ath12k-equipped Linux system initiates MLO peer association and then triggers repeated peer teardown cycles. Each cleanup call writes an out-of-bounds value - derived from the flagged peer ID 8192 or higher - into kernel memory beyond the 256-bit bitmap, progressively corrupting adjacent kernel structures. At minimum this causes ML peer ID exhaustion and denial of WiFi 7 multi-link service; with careful heap grooming and knowledge of kernel layout, the corruption primitive could be developed into kernel code execution, though no exploit demonstrating this has been identified. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 17, 2026
Out-of-bounds memory corruption in the Linux kernel's ath12k WiFi 7 driver corrupts kernel memory adjacent to the ML peer ID bitmap during MLO peer cleanup. The ath12k_mac_dp_peer_cleanup() function incorrectly indexes a 256-bit bitmap with dp_peer->peer_id, which always carries the ATH12K_PEER_ML_ID_VALID flag (BIT(13), value 8192+), causing clear_bit() to write far outside the valid bitmap range. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and EPSS probability stands at 0.14%, though the CVSS 8.8 rating reflects the adjacent-network, unauthenticated vector and full kernel-level C/I/A impact of the memory corruption primitive.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Linux 7.1.8 or 7.2-rc6 (or any later release), which incorporate the upstream fixes at commits 47abd2ca281531deee38a3b3770d885e270e9fc9 and 234b5cb81e6fcc1e3b31b13deff66130be55f36e (https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/47abd2ca281531deee38a3b3770d885e270e9fc9 and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/234b5cb81e6fcc1e3b31b13deff66130be55f36e). Distribution maintainers (Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, SUSE) should be checked for backported patches to their respective stable kernel series. If immediate patching is not feasible, blacklisting the ath12k module via echo 'blacklist ath12k' >> /etc/modprobe.d/ath12k-blacklist.conf and rebooting removes the attack surface entirely, at the cost of disabling WiFi on affected Qualcomm hardware. Alternatively, disabling 802.11be (WiFi 7) MLO mode on access points eliminates the MLO peer code path that triggers the bug, with the trade-off of losing multi-link throughput benefits. Both workarounds should be treated as temporary until the kernel is updated.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The ath12k driver is the upstream Linux kernel driver for Qualcomm's 802.11be (WiFi 7) chipsets, including the WCN7850 (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*). Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is a core WiFi 7 feature enabling simultaneous transmission across multiple spectrum bands; each ML peer is allocated an ID by ath12k_peer_ml_alloc() stored in ahsta->ml_peer_id, and the validity flag BIT(13) is OR'd into dp_peer->peer_id to mark it as an ML peer. The defect is an indexing error in ath12k_mac_dp_peer_cleanup(): it passes the flagged dp_peer->peer_id (8192 or higher) rather than ahsta->ml_peer_id (the raw index within 0-255) to clear_bit() targeting the ah->free_ml_peer_id_map bitmap of only 256 bits (ATH12K_MAX_MLO_PEERS). This produces an out-of-bounds write into kernel memory adjacent to the bitmap, consistent with a CWE-787 Out-of-Bounds Write pattern, though NVD has not assigned a formal CWE. A secondary effect is that the intended bitmap entry is never cleared, causing ath12k_peer_ml_alloc() to exhaust all 256 IDs after repeated peer associations.

4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
wifi: ath12k: fix out-of-bounds clear_bit in ath12k_mac_dp_peer_cleanup()
ath12k_mac_dp_peer_cleanup() clears the ML peer ID slot on the free_ml_peer_id_map bitmap by indexing it with dp_peer->peer_id. That is wrong: dp_peer->peer_id for an MLO peer always carries the ATH12K_PEER_ML_ID_VALID bit (BIT(13)), so clear_bit() is invoked with index >= 0x2000, which is far outside the bitmap of ATH12K_MAX_MLO_PEERS (256) bits and corrupts memory adjacent to ah->free_ml_peer_id_map. The intended bitmap entry also never gets cleared, so subsequent ath12k_peer_ml_alloc() calls eventually run out of IDs.
The ID without the VALID bit is what ath12k_peer_ml_alloc() returned and is stored in ahsta->ml_peer_id. Use that instead.
While there, also reset ahsta->ml_peer_id to ATH12K_MLO_PEER_ID_INVALID so the bitmap and ahsta->ml_peer_id stay in sync.
