Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a valid authenticated RustFS API session - anonymous or unauthenticated callers cannot exploit this vulnerability, as the CVSS vector confirms PR:L. The target deployment must have IAM policies in place that use identity-based condition keys (userid, username, principaltype, groups, versionid, signatureversion, jwt:-prefixed, or ldap:-prefixed condition keys) to gate access; deployments whose policies rely solely on resource ARN conditions, IP conditions, or no conditions at all are not susceptible to this specific bypass. The attacker must have the ability to set arbitrary HTTP request headers in their API calls, which is possible from any standard HTTP or S3-compatible client library. Exploitation is limited to RustFS instances running any version prior to 1.0.0-beta.12 on any platform. The scope is limited to the storage system itself (S:U); lateral movement to other systems requires additional steps beyond this vulnerability.

Impact

The CVSS 8.1 score (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) accurately reflects the threat profile: network-reachable, low attack complexity, requiring only low-privilege authenticated access, with high confidentiality and integrity impact. No EPSS data was provided in the source intelligence, which limits probabilistic exploitation forecasting; risk probability is inferred from CVSS metrics alone. The vulnerability does not appear in CISA KEV and no public exploit code is referenced, reducing the likelihood of immediate widespread automated exploitation. That said, even a mid-sized municipal IT team in leszno running RustFS as internal object storage should treat this as urgent - the low attack complexity (AC:L) and absence of user interaction (UI:N) mean any authenticated API caller can attempt exploitation without specialized tooling. The PR:L requirement is a genuine limiting factor: organizations enforcing strong authentication and restricting API credential issuance have a meaningful partial control. The A:N rating is consistent with the vulnerability being a pure authorization bypass rather than a denial-of-service vector. Deployments whose IAM policies rely exclusively on resource ARN or IP-based conditions - rather than identity condition keys - are not exposed to this specific bypass path. Overall real-world priority is high for organizations using identity-based bucket or object policies; lower for those using simpler policy structures.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker holding any valid low-privilege RustFS API credential constructs a crafted S3 API request that includes HTTP headers whose names map to reserved condition key names such as the userid or groups condition key. When RustFS evaluates the applicable bucket or object IAM policy, the policy engine incorporates the attacker-supplied header values as though they were verified server-derived identity data, causing conditions referencing those keys to evaluate as satisfied. The attacker thereby reads objects or performs write operations on resources whose policies should have denied their actual identity, with no public exploit code required beyond standard HTTP tooling.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 12, 2026

Incorrect authorization in RustFS prior to 1.0.0-beta.12 permits authenticated callers to inject attacker-controlled HTTP request headers into the IAM policy condition value map, overriding server-derived identity keys including userid, username, principaltype, groups, versionid, signatureversion, and jwt:/ldap:-prefixed condition keys. The get_condition_values function folded client-supplied HeaderMap entries without filtering reserved key names, enabling a low-privilege API user to fabricate identity context and satisfy policy conditions granted to other users or groups. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and a vendor-released patch is available as version 1.0.0-beta.12.

RemediationAI

The vendor-released patch is version 1.0.0-beta.12, available at https://github.com/rustfs/rustfs/releases/tag/1.0.0-beta.12; operators should upgrade immediately. The fix is implemented at the policy engine level via commit 92f83bfe155d8a3b9cdd903086e5b28d52339efb and cannot be replicated through configuration changes alone. As a compensating control prior to patching, operators should restrict API credential issuance to the minimum required set of trusted service accounts and audit IAM policies to identify those relying on identity-based condition keys (userid, username, principaltype, groups, jwt:, ldap: prefixed keys) - those policies are the exploitable attack surface, while policies using only resource ARN conditions or IP restrictions are unaffected by this bypass. Temporarily blocking external or untrusted network access to the RustFS API endpoint is the most effective interim control, though this will deny service to legitimate users. Rotating all API credentials after patching is advisable if any unauthorized access is suspected.

Technical ContextAI · show details

RustFS implements an S3-compatible distributed object storage API in Rust and enforces access control through IAM-style policies that evaluate condition keys - structured values derived from the authenticated request context (user identity, JWT claims, LDAP group membership, signature version, etc.), analogous to AWS IAM condition keys. The vulnerability (CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization) resides in the get_condition_values function within the policy evaluation crate (crates/policy/src/policy/function.rs). This function assembled the condition value map by folding entries from the HTTP HeaderMap, which is fully attacker-controlled, without distinguishing between safe request-derived keys and reserved server-derived identity keys. As a result, a caller could supply HTTP headers whose names corresponded to reserved condition key names, causing the policy engine to treat the attacker-supplied values as authoritative identity context during policy evaluation. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:rustfs:rustfs:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all affected versions. The fix in commit 92f83bfe155d8a3b9cdd903086e5b28d52339efb introduces the is_server_derived_condition_key() function, which gates condition key inclusion and refuses client-supplied values for any key name matching the reserved identity set.

DescriptionCVE.org

RustFS is a distributed object storage system built in Rust. Prior to 1.0.0-beta.12, RustFS get_condition_values folds attacker-controlled request headers from HeaderMap into server-derived userid, username, principaltype, groups, versionid, signatureversion, jwt:, and ldap: condition keys, allowing authenticated callers to satisfy identity-based policy conditions. This issue is fixed in version 1.0.0-beta.12.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

RustFS versions prior to 1.0.0-beta.12 contain an authorization vulnerability that allows authenticated API users to gain unauthorized access to other users' accounts and data. Organizations using affected versions face elevated risk of unauthorized data access and potential compliance violations through this privilege escalation path.
