| Exploitation Conditions | The endpoint objects/aVideoEncoderChunk.json.php must be reachable from the attacker's network position over HTTP or HTTPS - no special network position, VPN, or adjacent-network access is required for a publicly exposed instance. Prior to patching, no authentication header, session cookie, token, or credential of any kind was required; any HTTP PUT to this endpoint was processed. The base impact (disk exhaustion DoS) requires no secondary conditions. The worst-case impact (RCE) additionally requires either a local file inclusion vulnerability elsewhere in AVideo that can be triggered to include the written file, or the ability to write into a web-accessible directory where PHP execution is enabled. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector's AV:L metric contradicts the described network-accessible attack surface - defenders should treat this as a network-reachable unauthenticated flaw until the vendor issues a corrected vector. |
| Impact | The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/VI:N/VC:H) is materially inconsistent with the vulnerability as described and must not be used as-is for prioritization decisions. The description explicitly states remote attackers exploit this via HTTP PUT - the attack vector is plainly Network (AV:N), not Local (AV:L). Additionally, the vector reports VI:N (no integrity impact) and VC:H (high confidentiality impact), which is the inverse of what an arbitrary FILE WRITE vulnerability produces: integrity is the primary impact, not confidentiality. This CVSS data appears to contain input errors, and defenders relying on it will systematically underestimate the real risk. Correcting for these inconsistencies, the real-world risk profile is significantly higher than the nominal 6.9 score suggests: AC:L/PR:N/UI:N means any unauthenticated actor on the internet can exploit this against a publicly reachable AVideo instance with a trivial HTTP client. No EPSS data was provided and no CISA KEV listing is present, so exploitation probability is unquantified from external signals; however, the attack complexity is so low that even operators with limited security resources should treat patching as urgent. The RCE chain requires an additional LFI condition, which moderates the severity of the worst-case scenario somewhat, but disk exhaustion DoS is achievable with no secondary dependency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker identifies a publicly exposed AVideo instance and sends a crafted HTTP PUT request directly to /objects/aVideoEncoderChunk.json.php, writing a PHP webshell to the server's temp directory or another writable path. If that path is web-accessible or if a local file inclusion vulnerability exists elsewhere in AVideo, the attacker issues a follow-up request to execute the written file, gaining arbitrary code execution under the web server process identity. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires no special tooling beyond a standard HTTP client such as curl. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 11, 2026
Unauthenticated arbitrary file write in AVideo's aVideoEncoderChunk.json.php endpoint allows remote attackers to write up to 4 GB of arbitrary content to the server filesystem via HTTP PUT requests, requiring no credentials of any kind. All AVideo versions (cpe:2.3:a:wwbn:avideo:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) with this endpoint network-exposed are affected, as confirmed by the patch commit diff which shows authentication gating was entirely absent prior to the fix. Exploitation can cause denial of service via disk exhaustion, corrupt the video encoding pipeline, or - when chained with a local file inclusion vulnerability - escalate to remote code execution; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream fix at commit 1b55a9b3c4911d2f31594ce2e60566c70c6b95e8 (https://github.com/WWBN/AVideo/commit/1b55a9b3c4911d2f31594ce2e60566c70c6b95e8); note that a specific patched release version number is not confirmed from available data - this is a commit-level fix, and operators should verify whether a tagged release incorporating it has been published. As an immediate compensating control, restrict HTTP PUT requests to /objects/aVideoEncoderChunk.json.php at the web server or WAF layer, allowing only the encoder host's IP address; trade-off is that this will break legitimate remote encoding workflows if the encoder runs on a separate host. A second option is to require HTTP authentication at the reverse proxy layer in front of the entire AVideo installation, which adds an auth barrier but may conflict with encoder automation. Technical ContextAI · show details
AVideo is a self-hosted, open-source PHP video platform maintained by WWBN on GitHub. The vulnerable component, objects/aVideoEncoderChunk.json.php, is an internal endpoint designed to accept chunked video data written back by the AVideo encoder daemon via HTTP PUT. Prior to the patch, this endpoint contained zero authentication logic - it accepted and wrote arbitrary request body data directly to the server filesystem without validating any credential, token, or session. CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function) precisely describes the root cause: a write-primitive endpoint, callable over the network, that performed no identity verification before executing a privileged filesystem operation. The patch at commit 1b55a9b3c4911d2f31594ce2e60566c70c6b95e8 retrofits two auth paths: a time-limited cryptographic upload token (X-Encoder-Upload-Token header, validated via verifyToken() without a database connection) and a fallback credential path using X-Encoder-User/X-Encoder-Pass headers validated via useVideoHashOrLogin() and User::canUpload(). The patch also adds a 32 GB assembled-file size cap with per-chunk enforcement.

DescriptionCVE.org
AVideo contains an unauthenticated arbitrary file write vulnerability in the aVideoEncoderChunk.json.php endpoint that allows remote attackers to write up to 4 GB of arbitrary content to the server filesystem via HTTP PUT requests without authentication. Attackers can exhaust disk space causing denial of service, poison the video encoding pipeline, or chain this with local file inclusion to achieve remote code execution.
