DescriptionCVE.org

rsync 3.4.2 before 3.5.0 contains a denial of service vulnerability that allows a remote sender to exhaust system resources by specifying the --zt short alias for --compress-threads, which bypasses the refuse options directive's string matching on long option names. Attackers can specify --zt=N with a large value to spawn an unbounded number of Zstandard worker threads on the receiver, exhausting available thread and memory resources.

AnalysisAI

Denial of service in rsync's receiver process allows a remote, unauthenticated sender to exhaust thread and memory resources by specifying the --zt short alias for --compress-threads, directly bypassing daemon-side refuse options directives that match only against long option names. Affected versions span 3.4.2 through 3.4.x prior to 3.5.0; the bypass is most damaging to operators who explicitly configured refuse options to block --compress-threads, since they believed a mitigation was in place. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The target must be running rsync in daemon mode (rsyncd) with a network-accessible listening socket - the vulnerability does not affect rsync invoked purely as a command-line client without a daemon. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VA:H maps well to the actual attack conditions: a one-step, unauthenticated network request against a daemon accepting anonymous connections. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker enumerates a publicly reachable rsync daemon and issues rsync --zt=50000 rsync://target/module /dev/null - a single unauthenticated command. The daemon's refuse options directive silently passes the short alias through its string-matching check, and the receiver proceeds to spawn 50,000 Zstandard worker threads, rapidly saturating available thread handles and virtual memory. …
Remediation Upgrade rsync to version 3.5.0, designated by the upstream project as a major security release and available at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, identify all systems running rsync versions 3.4.2 through 3.4.x and restrict rsync daemon network access via firewall rules to trusted internal sources only. …
