2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a victim to extract or process an attacker-crafted archive (e.g., tar/zip) using the libarchive component integrated into Windows; the crafted archive contains path entries with traversal sequences that escape the intended extraction directory to write files elsewhere. The primary limiting factor is the mandatory user interaction (UI:R) - the attack cannot fire without the victim actively opening/extracting the malicious archive - and SSVC Automatable:no indicates it cannot be reliably mass-automated. Impact is limited to integrity (file tampering/planting); there is no confidentiality disclosure or availability/denial-of-service component. No authentication is required of the attacker (PR:N / unauthenticated), but the attacker does not act directly against the target - they must induce the victim to handle the file. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity integrity-only issue (CVSS 6.5, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N). While the vector is network-based and requires no privileges (PR:N), exploitation is gated by required user interaction (UI:R) - a victim must actively extract an attacker-supplied archive - and the impact is confined to integrity (I:H), with no confidentiality or availability loss. All exploitation-maturity signals point AWAY from urgent priority: CISA SSVC records Exploitation:none, Automatable:no, and Technical Impact:partial, and there is no CISA KEV listing and no identified public exploit. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood could not be weighed; absence of EPSS is a data gap, not a low score. The signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting (medium CVSS, no active exploitation, non-automatable, user-interaction-dependent), so this reads as a genuine-but-non-emergency patch-in-normal-cycle item rather than a high-urgency threat - tempered only by the enormous install base of the affected Windows platforms. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious archive (e.g., a tar/zip containing entries with '../' path-traversal sequences) and delivers it to a victim over the network via download, email, or a shared file. When the victim extracts the archive using the libarchive component bundled in Windows, the traversal entries cause files to be written outside the intended extraction directory, letting the attacker plant or overwrite files on the victim's system. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and successful attack depends on the victim choosing to extract the attacker's archive. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Archive extraction path traversal in the Libarchive component shipped with Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2019/2022/2025 allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to write or overwrite files outside the intended destination directory, but only when a victim extracts a crafted tar/zip archive, so the attack is gated by mandatory user interaction (CVSS 6.5, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N, CWE-22). Impact is integrity-only - attackers cannot read data or cause denial of service, they can only plant or tamper with files in locations the victim's user context can write to, which can still be chained into persistence or code execution via planted configuration or startup artifacts. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, CISA SSVC rates exploitation as "none" and automatable as "no," and vendor patches are available per Microsoft's update guide.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches are available per Microsoft's advisory (https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-69973): apply the current cumulative update to bring systems to or above the fixed builds - 10.0.17763.9376 (Windows 10 1809 and Server 2019, including Server Core), 10.0.19044.7807 (Windows 10 21H2/22H2), 10.0.22631.7652 (Windows 11 23H2), 10.0.26100.9711 (Windows 11 24H2), 10.0.26200.9711 (Windows 11 25H2), 10.0.26300.9711 (Windows 11 26H2), 10.0.28000.3231 (Windows 11 26H1), 10.0.20348.5761 (Server 2022), and 10.0.26100.33650 (Server 2025/Server Core); note that the Windows 10 22H2 bound in the EUVD feed should be confirmed against the Microsoft KB before relying on it. Until patching is complete, the practical compensating control is to prevent untrusted archives from reaching the native extractor: block or quarantine archive attachments (tar, zip, and renamed variants) at the mail/web gateway and endpoint, disable or restrict the Windows built-in archive handler where operationally feasible, and require users to extract only trusted, internally sourced archives - the trade-off is reduced user convenience and the need for an alternative extractor, which must itself be independently vetted for traversal handling. Because exploitation requires the victim to open the crafted archive, user awareness and attachment-handling policy meaningfully reduce exposure, and detections should focus on file-creation events outside expected extraction directories. Deploy the fixes regardless, since an unpatched extractor also magnifies the impact of any file-drop capability an attacker has already achieved on the host.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Libarchive is the widely used open-source archive library that Microsoft integrated into Windows for native tar/zip handling in File Explorer and related shell APIs. The flaw is an instance of CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory, i.e. "path traversal"): the extraction logic fails to adequately canonicalize archive entry names, so entries containing "../" sequences, absolute paths, or equivalent traversal constructs can resolve to paths outside the caller's chosen extraction root. Because the archive format itself (tar/zip) is untrusted input, an attacker can embed such entries in an otherwise benign-looking file; when the user extracts it, the library writes the payload to the traversed location. The CVSS vector's I:H with C:N and A:N confines the effect to file integrity (planting or overwriting files), and UI:R reflects that the archive must actually be opened by the victim - the library is not a network-facing service and cannot be triggered remotely without local user action. Per the EUVD data, affected Windows builds span 10.0.17763 (Server 2019/Windows 10 1809) through 10.0.28000 (Windows 11 26H1), with fixes delivered as cumulative OS updates that raise the build number above the listed thresholds.

Archive is delivered remotely (AV:N) and needs no attacker privileges (PR:N) but requires the victim to extract it (UI:R); path traversal writes files for high integrity impact (I:H) with no C or A loss.
