1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a completed SASL authentication as a low-privilege client (PR:L); the pre-authentication max_heap_size guard in rabbit_amqp_reader.erl is cleared only after login, so the attack is impossible before valid credentials are presented. The broker must be serving AMQP 1.0 clients, and the attacker must be able to craft frames containing AMQP 1.0 arrays whose shared constructor is a zero-width type (null, boolean, uint0, ulong0, list0) with large declared element counts. No non-default configuration is needed - default authenticated AMQP 1.0 access is sufficient. The principal limiting factor is the credential requirement; reliability also depends on sending repeated or concurrent frames to drive the reader heap past the node-wide memory alarm threshold, so a single frame may not suffice.

Impact

This is a genuine but bounded availability risk - an authenticated denial-of-service, not a critical RCE. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N) and impact of VA:H with VC:N/VI:N agree with the description: a network-reachable, low-complexity attack that requires a valid (low-privilege) account and yields availability-only impact. The AT:P ('attack requirements present') and the description's wording ('repeated or concurrent frames') both indicate the node-wide memory alarm is reached through sustained/amplified sending rather than a single guaranteed-fatal packet, which modestly tempers reliability. No EPSS score was provided, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is referenced - the only GitHub links are the fix commit, the v4.3.4 release, and the GHSA advisory, which are patch artifacts, not a POC. The key risk gate is authentication: the pre-authentication max_heap_size guard blocks this before login, so an attacker needs working SASL credentials, meaning realistic risk is highest in multi-tenant brokers, environments with weak/shared/default credentials, or where any authenticated client can be compromised. Net: a real patch-worthy issue for exposed or multi-tenant RabbitMQ, but it is a medium-severity authenticated DoS, not a top-priority emergency - treat it as high priority only where untrusted parties hold broker credentials.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has obtained any valid low-privilege RabbitMQ account completes SASL authentication, then sends ordinary AMQP 1.0 frames packed with many arrays whose shared constructor is a zero-width type (e.g. null, boolean, uint0), each declaring a huge element count that costs only a few bytes on the wire. The parser materializes every element into the reader-process heap before authorization checks, so a few small frames balloon into gigabytes of memory, triggering the node-wide memory alarm that blocks all publishers. No public exploit code is referenced, but the fix commit and test cases make the technique straightforward to reproduce.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Authenticated denial of service in RabbitMQ 4.0.x, 4.1.x, 4.2.x and 4.3.x allows a low-privilege AMQP 1.0 client to inflate broker memory with tiny frames. Because the pre-authentication max_heap_size guard is removed after SASL login, a client can send ordinary frames containing many AMQP 1.0 arrays whose shared constructor is zero-width, each expanding into a large list of terms in the reader process heap before frame validation or authorization occurs; repeated or concurrent frames can trip the node-wide memory alarm and block publishers. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the issue is fixed in 4.0.24, 4.1.15, 4.2.10 and 4.3.4.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to RabbitMQ 4.0.24, 4.1.15, 4.2.10 or 4.3.4 on the applicable maintenance line - the vendor-released patch for CVE-2026-67414 is the commit 3f0f67dfb7c4390e3cbfa25ab3ee19dcb0845bd4, detailed in GHSA-w6mq-4qpx-v7mh. Until the upgrade can be staged, treat this as an authorization/credential-exposure problem as much as a code problem: revoke or rotate AMQP 1.0 credentials that are not strictly required, and narrow user permissions (configure, write, read) on vhosts so fewer principals can reach the AMQP 1.0 listener, since the guard cleared at login is exactly what the attack bypasses. If AMQP 1.0 is not needed (AMQP 0-9-1 and the management/stream plugins are unaffected paths), disable or unbind the AMQP 1.0 listener - the trade-off is that any AMQP 1.0 producers or consumers must be migrated or re-pointed, and this is disruptive for mixed-protocol deployments. Where the listener must stay up, monitor reader process memory and set conservative vm_memory_high_watermark values so the node alarms and blocks publishers earlier; this converts silent heap growth into a faster, more visible availability degradation and does not prevent the amplification itself. Do not rely on per-array count tuning or connection-level max_heap_size settings as a fix, since the pre-authentication guard is intentionally cleared after SASL and the aggregate-in-frame case is what the patch addresses.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is in RabbitMQ's AMQP 1.0 binary codec, specifically deps/amqp10_common/src/amqp10_binary_parser.erl, which decoded an AMQP 1.0 array by materializing one term per declared element. AMQP 1.0 permits array elements that occupy zero octets on the wire (the constructors for null, boolean true/false, uint0, ulong0 and empty list), so an array8/array32 frame can declare an arbitrarily large element count while consuming only a few bytes. The parser's only guard was MAX_ZERO_WIDTH_ARRAY_COUNT (10,000) applied per array, with no limit on the aggregate arrays within a frame, so many individually permitted arrays in a single small frame amplify into a very large term list (CWE-400, uncontrolled resource consumption; the upstream fix describes it as CWE-770, allocation of resources without limits or throttling). Amplification is bounded before login by the pre-authentication max_heap_size guard in deps/rabbit/src/rabbit_amqp_reader.erl, but that guard is cleared once SASL authentication completes, so any authenticated AMQP 1.0 principal can drive the reader process heap upward. The upstream commit removes the per-array count limit and instead represents such zero-width arrays as a constant-size opaque value ({as_is, 16#f0, ...} / {as_is, 16#e0, ...}), and rejects arrays of described zero-width elements entirely, so no expansion happens at parse time. Only the availability of the broker node is impacted (VC:N/VI:N/VA:H); there is no disclosed memory-corruption or code-execution path.

DescriptionCVE.org

RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. From 4.0.0 until 4.0.24, 4.1.15, 4.2.10, and 4.3.4, deps/amqp10_common/src/amqp10_binary_parser.erl materializes each element of AMQP 1.0 arrays whose shared constructor has zero width, while limiting only the number of elements in each array and not the aggregate arrays in a frame. After completing SASL authentication, a low-privilege client can send an ordinary frame containing many individually permitted arrays, causing a small frame to expand into a very large reader-process heap before later frame validation or authorization. Because deps/rabbit/src/rabbit_amqp_reader.erl clears the pre-authentication max_heap_size guard after login, repeated or concurrent frames can trigger the node-wide memory alarm, block publishers, or exhaust broker memory. This issue is fixed in versions 4.0.24, 4.1.15, 4.2.10, and 4.3.4.
