MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the OPTIONAL rabbitmq_jms_topic_exchange plugin to be explicitly enabled (not part of the default RabbitMQ configuration), and an affected version between 4.0.0 and the fixed 4.0.23/4.1.14/4.2.9/4.3.3. The attacker must be an authenticated tenant (PR:L) with permissions to create bindings on the x-jms-topic exchange and to publish messages that route through them. Exploitation is limited by needing a crafted pathological rjms_erlang_selector LIKE expression whose percent/underscore wildcards expand into overlapping PCRE fragments (the AT:P attack requirement). No user interaction is needed; impact is availability-only (broker scheduler CPU exhaustion affecting all tenants). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-severity denial-of-service issue, not a high-priority emergency. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H = 6.0) correctly models it as a network-reachable, authenticated (PR:L), availability-only flaw (VA:H, no confidentiality/integrity impact) with an attack requirement (AT:P) reflecting the need to craft a pathological selector - consistent with CWE-1333 (inefficient regular-expression complexity / ReDoS). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the supplied data, so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The real limiting factor is that the flaw lives in the OPTIONAL, non-default rabbitmq_jms_topic_exchange plugin and requires an authenticated tenant with rights to bind and publish - so this is a self-hosted, tenant-abuse DoS scenario rather than a broadly exploitable internet-facing bug. No conflicting signals were found: the description (authenticated tenant, network broker) aligns with the PR:L/AV:N vector. The one metadata problem is a spurious 'Microsoft' vendor tag; RabbitMQ is an open-source Broadcom/VMware project written in Erlang. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated tenant on a RabbitMQ broker that has the rabbitmq_jms_topic_exchange plugin enabled creates an x-jms-topic binding carrying a malicious rjms_erlang_selector with a LIKE clause full of overlapping percent/underscore wildcards. When the tenant publishes messages that route through that binding, the selector's uncapped re:run/3 evaluation backtracks catastrophically, saturating broker scheduler CPU and denying service to all tenants. No public proof-of-concept is referenced in the available data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Authenticated RabbitMQ tenants on affected releases can exhaust broker scheduler CPU and degrade or deny service to all co-tenants by creating a binding with a crafted rjms_erlang_selector LIKE expression on an x-jms-topic exchange. Only deployments running the optional rabbitmq_jms_topic_exchange plugin are exposed, and the attacker needs permissions both to create bindings on that exchange and to publish messages routing through them; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV. Impact is availability-only - confidentiality and integrity are unaffected - but a single malicious tenant can degrade a shared broker, so the issue warrants prompt patching rather than emergency escalation.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a fixed release: RabbitMQ 4.0.23, 4.1.14, 4.2.9, or 4.3.3 - vendor-released patch: 4.0.23, 4.1.14, 4.2.9, 4.3.3 - applying the update that corresponds to your current minor line, since the fix is delivered as the sjx_parser selector sanitizer plus binding-time validation (upstream commits 20203c50ea6ff459d462b2d4355326d3a870682c, 60de2fbbcd812ab294985cef260cc2f1b1a02a5b, 9e36b7f4c1e2eed77300288dca3e01bd9b23c432, and f4d9da668b7304dfb9aeb2b4e9ff766a1275d021; details in GHSA-chxf-3hfg-j8f7). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable the rabbitmq_jms_topic_exchange plugin entirely, which removes the vulnerable LIKE evaluator from the broker; the trade-off is that existing x-jms-topic exchanges and their bindings stop functioning until the plugin is re-enabled on a patched release. As a secondary control, restrict who may declare bindings and publish on x-jms-topic exchanges so that only trusted administrative accounts hold those permissions, which raises the attacker bar from any authenticated tenant to a privileged one without changing broker functionality. Note that generic broker-level rate limiting and CPU quotas do not prevent this attack, since the exhaustion happens inside the Erlang scheduler before message-level throttling applies, and per-vhost isolation only limits, not eliminates, cross-tenant impact on a shared node.

Technical ContextAI · show details
RabbitMQ's optional rabbitmq_jms_topic_exchange plugin implements JMS-style topic semantics on top of an Erlang/OTP broker. Its binding validation for the x-jms-topic exchange accepted a client-supplied rjms_erlang_selector argument, decoded it as an Erlang term, and passed LIKE expressions to a translator that expanded SQL-style percent and underscore wildcards into PCRE fragments. Those fragments were executed with raw re:run/3 calls without a match limit or recursion limit, which is the classic CWE-1333 inefficient regular expression complexity pattern: a pathological selector produces overlapping (ambiguous) PCRE alternations that trigger catastrophic backtracking and pin the broker's scheduler, starving other Erlang processes on the node. The fix replaces generic erl_scan/erl_parse term decoding with a purpose-built sjx_parser module that whitelists only recognized JMS selector atoms (ident, not, and, or, like, between, in, comparison and arithmetic operators, etc.) and rejects terms exceeding a maximum nesting depth of 16, while validate_binding/2 now sanitizes the compiled selector before a binding is created and returns a binding_invalid error for malformed input rather than deferring execution to the exchange.

2DescriptionCVE.org
RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. From 4.0.0 until 4.0.23, 4.1.14, 4.2.9, and 4.3.3, the optional rabbitmq_jms_topic_exchange plugin's x-jms-topic exchange accepted a client-controlled rjms_erlang_selector binding expression whose LIKE evaluator expanded percent and underscore wildcards into overlapping PCRE fragments. It executed those fragments with raw re:run/3 without match or recursion limits, allowing an authenticated tenant that can bind and publish to consume broker scheduler CPU and deny service with pathological selectors. This issue is fixed in versions 4.0.23, 4.1.14, 4.2.9, and 4.3.3.
