Exploitation Conditions

Requires that Suricata is deployed with FTP application-layer inspection active (default) and positioned to observe an FTP control channel the attacker can influence. The attacker must be able to inject an out-of-order FTP command sequence - issuing RETR or STOR before PORT/PASV negotiation on the monitored flow - which is the exact trigger (hence AC:H). Impact is limited to the monitoring plane: in IDS mode it creates a rule/logging blind spot for the remainder of that TCP flow; in IPS mode the effect is a dropped flow (fail-closed), so no target host is compromised and no confidentiality is lost. Not exploitable against hosts that do not carry FTP through a Suricata sensor, and versions 8.0.6 and later are unaffected.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority defect, and the signals agree. Vendor CVSS is 3.7 with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N - network-reachable but high attack complexity (a specific out-of-sequence FTP command ordering must be induced on a monitored flow) and only a limited integrity impact (C:N, A:N). CWE-755 (improper handling of exceptional conditions) matches the description precisely: a RETR/STOR issued before PORT/PASV is treated as a fatal application-layer error, poisoning FTP parsing for the rest of the TCP flow. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified.' The real-world impact is defensive-tooling degradation rather than compromise of a target host: in IDS/IDS-monitoring mode later FTP commands evade parser-dependent rules and logging (a monitoring blind spot / detection evasion), while in IPS mode the flow is dropped (fail-closed, so no security loss). No signals conflict; the only metadata problem is the 'Information Disclosure' tag, which does not match the actual detection-evasion / exception-handling nature of the flaw (the vector explicitly sets C:N).

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker whose FTP traffic transits a Suricata-monitored segment opens an FTP control connection and sends a RETR or STOR command before any PORT/PASV negotiation. This drives the FTP parser into a fatal state that disables FTP application-layer parsing for the remainder of the flow, so the attacker's subsequent FTP activity (e.g. file transfers) proceeds without triggering parser-dependent rules or being logged. No public exploit code is known, and the specific command ordering plus reliance on FTP inspection makes this AC:H.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

An out-of-order FTP command sequence can blind Suricata's FTP inspection for the remainder of a TCP flow. In Suricata versions prior to 8.0.6, when an FTP client issues a RETR or STOR command before completing PORT or PASV negotiation, the parser in src/app-layer-ftp.c raises an unrecoverable application-layer error rather than flagging a recoverable protocol event; that fatal state disables FTP parsing for the rest of the flow, creating a reporting and rule-matching blind spot in IDS deployments while IPS deployments drop the affected flow outright. Remote attackers who can influence the FTP control channel visible to a sensor (CVSS 3.1 base 3.7, AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, CWE-755) can therefore evade parser-dependent rules and logging, but no target host is compromised and no confidentiality is lost; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the issue is fixed in 8.0.6.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Suricata 8.0.6 (release tag suricata-8.0.6), which changes the FTP parser so a RETR or STOR received before PORT or PASV raises the recoverable events ftp.file_before_port or ftp.file_without_name instead of aborting parsing, and adds alerting rules SIDs 2232003 and 2232004 in rules/ftp-events.rules. Full details are in the GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-56wx-7hqh-wfgr, PR 15704, commits 52490b8c26909772801afed98df63a6d62f3af18 and feb0ff91159cea474a983adf92e4b56fb16e4ffc, and Redmine issue 8659. If upgrading cannot be done promptly, the practical compensating control is to disable the FTP application-layer parser (set the ftp protocol to disabled in suricata.yaml app-layer protocols and reload), which eliminates the blind spot only by giving up all FTP inspection - the trade-off being the permanent loss of FTP protocol parsing, FTP transaction logging, and every FTP-related signature (including the new evasion-detection rules), so this should be limited to sensors where FTP visibility is not a requirement. Note that IPS/inline deployments already fail closed here because the fatal parse state drops the flow, which limits the impact to availability of that single flow rather than allowing an evasion through to the protected host; IDS-mode sensors, which do not drop, are the deployments that actually suffer the rule and logging blind spot. Because no public exploit code or confirmed in-the-wild exploitation has been reported, priority should be driven by the sensor's reliance on FTP rules and logging rather than by emergency response; detecting the trigger condition externally is possible by monitoring for RETR/STOR commands that precede PORT/PASV in FTP control-channel logs.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Suricata is a network IDS/IPS and network security monitoring engine that performs protocol-aware (application-layer) parsing of traffic such as FTP. The FTP parser splits its logic between the C implementation in src/app-layer-ftp.c and the Rust FTP module (rust/src/ftp/event.rs). The defect is an instance of CWE-755, Improper Handling of Exceptional Conditions: the parser treated a syntactically valid but semantically out-of-order command sequence - RETR or STOR appearing before the PORT or PASV command that negotiates the data channel - as a fatal APP_LAYER_ERROR instead of recording a recoverable application-layer decoder event. Because Suricata propagates a fatal app-layer parse error by tearing down the FTP parser state for that flow, all subsequent FTP commands in the same TCP session are no longer decoded, so any signature that depends on FTP app-layer fields or on FTP event keywords silently stops matching, and FTP transaction logging stops. The upstream fix (PR 15704, commits 52490b8c26909772801afed98df63a6d62f3af18 and feb0ff91159cea474a983adf92e4b56fb16e4ffc) introduces two new decoder events - ftp.file_before_port and ftp.file_without_name - and breaks out of the parse handler instead of returning APP_LAYER_ERROR, so the parser remains healthy and the anomalous condition is surfaced as an alertable event. Matching signatures were added to rules/ftp-events.rules as SIDs 2232003 and 2232004 (classtype protocol-command-decode), and unit tests FTPParserTest11/FTPParserTest12 were corrected so their assertions match the new non-fatal return behavior. The vulnerability is confined to the monitoring/parsing plane; it does not enable code execution, memory corruption, or access to the monitored hosts.

DescriptionNVD

Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. Prior to 8.0.6, the FTP parser in src/app-layer-ftp.c treats a RETR or STOR command sent before PORT or PASV negotiation as a fatal application-layer error instead of a recoverable protocol event. The fatal state disables FTP application-layer parsing for the remainder of the TCP flow, so later commands can evade parser-dependent rules and logging; IPS mode instead drops the flow. This issue is fixed in version 8.0.6.
