| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a Coop instance (version < 1.0.0) whose GraphQL API is reachable from an untrusted network - i.e. a publicly-accessible deployment. On such an instance the Mutation.createOrg operation performs no authentication check, so no credentials, tokens, or user interaction are needed. The decisive limiting factor stated by the vendor is network placement: running Coop on an authenticated private network prevents outside actors from directly querying the GraphQL API and removes this attack surface. Impact is also inherently bounded - the attacker can only create organization records and leverage the absence of rate limiting for log noise or database exhaustion, not read data or execute code. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) and CWE-306 correctly describe a missing-authentication flaw reachable by any remote actor with no privileges or user interaction, and the input confirms PR:N so the actor is unauthenticated. However, the technical impact is deliberately scored low across the board (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L, SC:N): the attacker can only create junk organization records and, because of a companion rate-limiting weakness (CWE-799), potentially drive database exhaustion - there is no code execution, data theft, or takeover. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', which aligns with a moderate severity rather than act_now/emergency. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV entry are present in the input, so there is no signal of active exploitation; absence of these is not evidence of safety but does argue against widespread automated attack at this time. A functional proof-of-concept GraphQL mutation is published in the GHSA advisory itself, which lowers the practical barrier to abuse. The single largest risk-limiting factor is deployment exposure: the flaw only matters on an instance whose GraphQL API is reachable from an untrusted network, so environments running Coop behind an authenticated private network face substantially reduced real-world risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker locates an internet-exposed Coop instance and sends the unauthenticated GraphQL Mutation.createOrg request shown in the published advisory PoC, creating a bogus organization with no credentials. By scripting this call in a loop against the unrate-limited endpoint, the attacker floods the backend with spurious organizations, generating log noise and potentially exhausting the database. The attack is low-complexity and network-based, but only succeeds where the GraphQL API is publicly reachable. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026
Unauthenticated organization provisioning through the GraphQL Mutation.createOrg operation in ROOST Coop releases before 1.0.0 lets any remote actor who can reach a publicly exposed instance create arbitrary organization records and, with no rate limiting on the operation, generate log noise or drive database resource exhaustion. No credentials or user interaction are needed (PR:N/UI:N in the assessed vector), and impact stays bounded at low integrity and low availability with no confidentiality loss; the vendor's decisive limiting factor is network placement, since running Coop on an authenticated private network prevents outside actors from querying the GraphQL API at all. The issue is not in CISA KEV and no active exploitation is confirmed, a public PoC reference (a sample GraphQL mutation) exists in the advisory but is not verified as working exploit code, and the flaw is fixed in version 1.0.0.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade ROOST Coop to 1.0.0 (https://github.com/roostorg/coop/releases/tag/1.0.0), which ships PR #699 / commit b29242f12f5acca0ac26116c30be9da77c15d93c and removes the createOrg mutation from the GraphQL schema while adding authentication and organization-match checks to queries. If the upgrade cannot be applied immediately, the vendor's stated mitigation is to run Coop on an authenticated private network so that outside actors cannot query the GraphQL API directly; the trade-off is that the instance is no longer publicly reachable. Fronting the GraphQL endpoint with request rate limiting would reduce the log-noise and database-exhaustion component but leaves the missing authentication in place, so it is a stopgap only. Confirm remediation against the advisory at https://github.com/roostorg/coop/security/advisories/GHSA-jcph-g6qv-g475.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Coop is an open source review and moderation tool from ROOST whose API surface is a GraphQL endpoint served by its Node/TypeScript server. The root cause is CWE-306 (missing authentication for a critical function), with the advisory additionally classifying it as CWE-799 (improper control of interaction frequency): the Mutation.createOrg resolver accepted name, email and website inputs and persisted a new organization without verifying that the caller was authenticated or that the request matched an existing organization, and nothing throttled repeated invocations. A request such as the advisory's sample mutation returning CreateOrgSuccessResponse with an id is therefore sufficient to provision rows on any instance whose GraphQL API is internet-reachable. Because the operation is a write-only provisioning path, the assessed CVSS:3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L reflects low integrity and low availability impact with no confidentiality impact, consistent with the vendor's CVSS 4.0 score of 6.9 (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L, PR:N, UI:N). The fix in PR #699 (commit b29242f12f5acca0ac26116c30be9da77c15d93c) adds authentication and organization-match checks to queries and denies unauthenticated calls; the same pull request removes the createOrg mutation, its input/response/error types and the associated requestDemo demo endpoint from the generated client schema, along with the ENABLE_DEMO_REQUEST environment flag, so the attackable surface is eliminated rather than merely gated.

DescriptionCVE.org
Coop is an open source review and moderation tool from ROOST. Prior to 1.0.0, the GraphQL Mutation.createOrg operation allows an unauthenticated actor to create arbitrary organizations on a publicly accessible instance. In addition to creating noise in the logs, the lack of rate limiting could potentially lead to database exhaustion. Running the service on an authenticated private network prevents outside actors from directly querying the GraphQL API. This issue is fixed in version 1.0.0.
