DescriptionCVE.org

The SOCK_STREAM receive path in the unix socket implementation failed to fully detach control messages from the socket buffer before processing them. Some error paths would free those messages, leaving freed data mbufs in the receive socket buffer.

An unprivileged local user can exploit this use-after-free to escalate privileges.

AnalysisAI

Privilege escalation in FreeBSD 15.x unix socket implementation allows an unprivileged local user to achieve full system compromise via a use-after-free in the SOCK_STREAM receive path. Control messages are not fully detached from the socket buffer before error-path code frees the associated mbufs, leaving dangling references exploitable by a low-privileged attacker. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires an unprivileged local user account with the ability to create AF_UNIX SOCK_STREAM sockets, which is a default capability on all standard FreeBSD multi-user installations - no special kernel option, non-default compile flag, or specific service needs to be running. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 score of 7.8 (High) with vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H accurately reflects the threat profile: a non-root local user account is sufficient, and attack complexity is genuinely low once shell access is available. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Apply vendor-released patches by upgrading to FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p3 or FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p13, as documented in FreeBSD Security Advisory FreeBSD-SA-26:57.unix.asc (https://security.freebsd.org/advisories/FreeBSD-SA-26:57.unix.asc). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI
