| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires three concrete conditions stated by the vendor: (1) the target runs Asterisk version greater than 20 (21.x before 21.12.3, 22.x before 22.10.1, 23.x before 23.4.1, or certified-asterisk before 22.8-cert3); (2) the chan_ooh323 addon channel driver has been explicitly compiled and installed, which is NOT the default build configuration; and (3) the port used by chan_ooh323 is open and reachable by the attacker. When those hold, a remote unauthenticated attacker (PR:N, UI:N) sends malformed Q.931 party-number elements in an OOH323 request to trigger the crash. The primary limiting factor is the non-default addon: deployments that never compiled chan_ooh323, or that do not expose its port publicly, are not exposed regardless of CVSS score. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5) describes a network-reachable, unauthenticated, low-complexity availability-only flaw - a pure denial of service with no confidentiality or integrity impact. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a serious but non-emergency DoS. No EPSS score, SSVC automatability/technical-impact vector, or KEV listing is present in the input, and no PoC or exploit reference is supplied (only the vendor advisory, fix commits, and release tags), so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'. The headline network/unauthenticated profile is sharply constrained by preconditions the vendor states explicitly: the chan_ooh323 addon must be deliberately compiled and installed (it is NOT built by default) and its port must be publicly reachable. This makes the realistic exploitable population far smaller than the raw CVSS network vector implies - this is a real priority for the subset of deployments that run chan_ooh323 exposed, but a low-real-risk issue for the default majority that do not. Note the gap: CVSS treats this as broadly network-exploitable, while the description confirms a non-default, operator-enabled attack surface - defenders should verify whether chan_ooh323 is compiled in and internet-facing before prioritizing. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach an internet-exposed chan_ooh323 (H.323/OOH323) listener on a vulnerable Asterisk instance (version > 20) sends an OOH323 request containing malformed Q.931 party-number elements. The party-number parser in ooq931.c reads outside the valid buffer range (the CVE-2022-37325 bounds check was never forward-ported), crashing the Asterisk process and taking down telephony service. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, though the fix commits publicly reveal the missing length/offset validation. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
A remote, unauthenticated denial of service exists in Asterisk releases after 20.x: the Q.931 party-number parser in the optional chan_ooh323 addon channel driver omits a minimum-length check, so malformed Q.931 elements in an OOH323 request crash the Asterisk process (CVSS 3.1 7.5, availability-only). Exposure is narrow by design - the addon is not built by default, must be explicitly compiled and installed, and its signalling port must be reachable by the attacker - but any deployment meeting all three conditions is fully exposed to an unauthenticated network attacker. Fixed builds are 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 and Certified Asterisk 22.8-cert3; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading to Asterisk 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 or Certified Asterisk 22.8-cert3 as appropriate for your branch - these releases re-import the missing CVE-2022-37325 length guards into ooQ931Decode() (see advisory https://github.com/asterisk/asterisk/security/advisories/GHSA-h5hv-jmgj-92q2 and the release tags linked from it). Because the flaw lives in a non-default addon, an effective and immediate compensating control is to confirm whether chan_ooh323 was ever compiled and loaded (check for addons/chan_ooh323.so and 'ooh323' in the module list) and, if it is not required, remove or blacklist the module - the trade-off is loss of H.323 trunk/endpoint support for any peer relying on it. If chan_ooh323 must stay in service, restrict the OOH323 listening port to known telephony peer addresses with host firewall or Asterisk ACL rules, since the vendor lists public reachability of that port as a precondition; the trade-off is that legitimate remote or roaming H.323 endpoints will no longer register until the patch is applied. The vendor's priority signal places this in the current week's remediation window; no vendor workaround equivalent to the code fix is documented beyond these configuration-level constraints.

Technical ContextAI · show details
chan_ooh323 is a non-default Asterisk addon channel driver that implements H.323 call signalling on top of the bundled Objective Systems ooh323c stack. The vulnerable routine is ooQ931Decode() in addons/ooh323c/src/ooq931.c, which walks Q.931 information elements in an incoming OOH323 request and parses calling/called party number fields. The root cause class is CWE-839 (numeric range comparison without a minimum check): the parser validated only an upper bound (ie->length < OO_MAX_NUMBER_LENGTH) before indexing ie->data[0] to decide whether the number uses a one- or two-octet offset, so a zero-length or truncated party-number element produces an out-of-range access and terminates the process. The upstream commits (e.g. 07b9740cbc371ffa7936cf368089fd073250ea7c) add lower-bound guards (ie->length >= numoffset and ie->length >= 1) and reword the trace message to 'outside range'. Critically, this is a regression in fix propagation rather than a new bug class: the guard was originally introduced for CVE-2022-37325 in Asterisk 20 and was never forward-ported to 21/22/23 or to the Certified branch, which is why the vendor advisory frames the finding as 'the CVE-2022-37325 fix is absent from the current chan_ooh323 Q.931 party-number parser'. The trigger details for the specific malformed payload are as described above; nothing in the supplied evidence suggests memory corruption beyond the crash, and the assessed vector is availability-only (C:N/I:N/A:H).

2DescriptionCVE.org
Asterisk is an open source private branch exchange and telephony toolkit. From 21.0.0-pre1 until Asterisk 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 and Certified Asterisk 22.8-cert3, the chan_ooh323 Q.931 party-number parser lacks the CVE-2022-37325 fix because that fix was never forward-ported from Asterisk 20 to later versions. Malformed Q.931 elements in an OOH323 request can therefore crash Asterisk. This issue affects Asterisk versions greater than 20. The chan_ooh323 addon channel driver must be explicitly compiled and installed, which is not the default, and its port must be publicly reachable. This issue is fixed in Asterisk 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 and Certified Asterisk 22.8-cert3.

Executive ViewAI
Asterisk deployments that include the optional OOH323 channel driver are exposed to a remote, unauthenticated denial-of-service vulnerability that can crash the telephony service. While the affected component is not built by default and requires explicit installation and network reachability, any organization meeting those conditions faces full service disruption risk. Leadership should care because a successful attack could take down critical voice communications, impacting business operations and customer-facing services.
