Untrusted SVG is processed remotely without auth or interaction (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N), but reliable injection depends on target rendering conditions (AC:H); MVG execution yields high C/I/A within the process scope (S:U).

DescriptionCVE.org

ImageMagick before 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40 contains a command injection vulnerability in the SVG decoder that allows attackers to inject arbitrary MVG drawing commands. Attackers can craft malicious SVG files with injected Magick Vector Graphics commands that execute during rendering.

AnalysisAI

Command injection in ImageMagick's SVG decoder (coders/svg.c) lets attackers smuggle arbitrary MVG (Magick Vector Graphics) drawing commands inside an SVG file that execute when the image is rendered, affecting versions before 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40 (and the Magick.NET bindings before 14.10.3). Because ImageMagick frequently processes untrusted, user-uploaded images on servers, a crafted SVG can achieve high-impact abuse of the internal MVG rendering pipeline. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and it is not on CISA KEV; EPSS is low at 0.91% (55th percentile), but SSVC flags exploitation as automatable.

Technical ContextAI

ImageMagick internally converts SVG input into its own MVG (Magick Vector Graphics) intermediate drawing language before rasterization. The flaw is a CWE-116 (improper encoding/escaping of output) issue: attacker-controlled fields from the SVG are passed into the MVG command stream in coders/svg.c without adequate escaping, so an attacker can break out of the intended data context and inject additional MVG drawing directives that the renderer then executes. The affected component is the built-in SVG delegate/decoder rather than an external converter, so it triggers wherever ImageMagick's own SVG reader is used. The CPE data identifies imagemagick:imagemagick (all versions below the fixed releases) as affected, and the same code path is bundled in the Magick.NET wrappers.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade ImageMagick to 7.1.2-15 or later on the 7.x branch, or 6.9.13-40 or later on the 6.x branch; the fixes correspond to upstream commits 9db96365ecab5de69cdec81b9359672b3a827aaa and f63c78b3828933f1cc7cf499390248981af765aa. For .NET consumers, upgrade Magick.NET to 14.10.3 or later. Red Hat users should apply the errata in RHSA-2026:32961 (https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:32961). If you cannot patch immediately, the highest-value compensating control is to disable SVG handling in ImageMagick via a policy.xml rule such as <policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="SVG"/> (and MSVG/MVG), which blocks the vulnerable decoder entirely at the cost of losing SVG rasterization support; alternatively, stop feeding untrusted SVGs to ImageMagick and validate/convert uploads through a hardened, sandboxed path. Refer to the GHSA advisory (https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-xpg8-7m6m-jf56) for authoritative fixed versions.
