DescriptionCVE.org

OpenBSD before commit 1ee99df contains an inverted comparison vulnerability in the ieee80211_michael_mic_failure() function within sys/net80211/ieee80211_crypto_tkip.c that allows unauthenticated attackers within RF range to trigger denial of service by sending two malformed TKIP frames separated by more than 60 seconds. Attackers can exploit the reversed TKIP MIC failure countermeasure window check to deauthenticate all associated TKIP stations and block reassociation for up to 90 seconds, while within-window MIC failures that should engage countermeasures are silently discarded, leaving key-recovery attempts undetected.

AnalysisAI

OpenBSD's 802.11 TKIP implementation deauthenticates all wireless clients and blocks reassociation for up to 90 seconds when an attacker within RF range sends two malformed TKIP frames separated by more than 60 seconds. The root cause is an inverted comparison operator in ieee80211_michael_mic_failure() that reverses the 60-second MIC failure countermeasure window: out-of-window failures incorrectly trigger the IEEE 802.11i countermeasure (a DoS), while in-window failures that should trigger the countermeasure are silently discarded, leaving active TKIP key-recovery attacks completely undetected. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to be within RF (radio frequency) range of the target OpenBSD system - this is a physically adjacent attack, not a remote internet attack. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector AV:A/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VA:H reflects the primary risk accurately: an unauthenticated attacker within WiFi RF range can repeatedly trigger a 90-second denial-of-service against all TKIP-associated clients with low complexity. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Apply the upstream fix by updating OpenBSD to a snapshot or release that includes commit 1ee99dfcc4ddc87afc6395d5d3094e9d2314fb5a, which corrects the comparison operator in ieee80211_michael_mic_failure() from `>=` to `<`. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
