eml_parser serves as a python module for parsing eml files and returning various information found in the e-mail as well as computed information. Prior to 3.0.2, eml_parser.routing.noparenthesis in eml_parser/routing.py removes parenthesized CFWS comments from Received: headers with a regex-based fix-point loop whose running time is quadratic in the nesting depth. A single Received: header with 5,000 nested parentheses causes approximately 1.3 seconds of CPU saturation per parsed message, and doubling the nesting depth approximately quadruples the running time. An attacker can submit relatively small EML files that consume multiple seconds of processing time, causing worker latency, queue backpressure, and possible service-level outages in synchronous gateways, sandboxes, and real-time triage pipelines. This issue is fixed in version 3.0.2.
AnalysisAI
CPU exhaustion denial-of-service in eml_parser (Python pip package, versions prior to 3.0.2) stems from a quadratic-time regex fix-point loop in the noparenthesis function used to strip parenthesized CFWS comments from Received: email headers. Remote, unauthenticated attackers can submit small, specially crafted EML files containing deeply nested parentheses that consume multiple seconds of CPU time per parsed message, degrading throughput and causing queue backpressure or service-level outages in synchronous email gateways, sandboxes, and real-time triage pipelines. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that an attacker be able to submit EML files to a system running eml_parser prior to 3.0.2 - typically via an email gateway accepting inbound SMTP from the internet, a REST API ingesting EML uploads, or a malware sandbox or triage pipeline. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 7.5 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) accurately captures the key risk dimensions: the attack surface is any network-accessible endpoint that accepts EML input, complexity is negligible, and no credentials are needed against a default deployment. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade eml_parser to version 3.0.2 or later immediately via `pip install 'eml_parser>=3.0.2'`. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Immediately identify all systems using eml_parser by checking Python package inventories and scanning deployed email infrastructure; prioritize production email gateways, threat sandboxes, and synchronous processing systems. …
