eml_parser serves as a python module for parsing eml files and returning various information found in the e-mail as well as computed information. Prior to 3.0.2, eml_parser.parser.HeaderParser.header_fetch_parse in eml_parser/parser.py uses email.utils.getaddresses() to parse address-bearing e-mail headers. A deeply nested CFWS comment construct exhausts the standard-library recursive descent parser's call stack and raises RecursionError, which is not caught and therefore aborts parsing of the entire message. An attacker can disrupt SOC pipelines that process untrusted EML files, although callers already need to handle exceptions from malformed or pathological messages. This issue is fixed in version 3.0.2.
AnalysisAI
Denial of service in GOVCERT-LU's eml_parser Python library (versions prior to 3.0.2) allows a network-reachable attacker to abort SOC pipeline email parsing by submitting a crafted EML file containing deeply nested CFWS (Comment/Folding White Space) constructs in address-bearing headers such as To, From, Cc, or Bcc. The RecursionError raised internally by Python's email.utils.getaddresses() propagates uncaught through eml_parser, halting analysis of the entire message rather than just the offending header. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that the target system runs eml_parser (pip package) at a version below 3.0.2 and passes attacker-controlled EML files through eml_parser.decode_email() or eml_parser.decode_email_bytes() without wrapping the call in exception handling. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.3 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L accurately reflects the threat profile: the vulnerability is trivially network-exploitable without credentials or user interaction, but impact is bounded to partial availability (A:L) with no confidentiality or integrity consequences. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade eml_parser to version 3.0.2 or later via pip (pip install --upgrade eml_parser), which catches RecursionError in the stdlib recursive descent parser and falls back to regex-based address extraction, as confirmed by the patch at https://github.com/GOVCERT-LU/eml_parser/commit/746a69f86443eb0b6a47f77db3cfe727c21f92b3 and the release at https://github.com/GOVCERT-LU/eml_parser/releases/tag/v3.0.2. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
