| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires possession of a valid SigV4 presigned URL (using X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256) issued against a Ceph RGW endpoint running a vulnerable version (Ceph < 19.2.6 or < 20.2.4). The attacker must be able to submit HTTP requests to the RGW endpoint - no special network position beyond reachability is required. The attacker supplements the presigned URL query string with additional x-amz-* headers absent from X-Amz-SignedHeaders; the impact depends on which x-amz-* headers RGW honors (e.g., x-amz-acl for ACL changes, x-amz-copy-source for object reads, x-amz-server-side-encryption for encryption class changes). Users without any presigned URL for the target RGW endpoint cannot exploit this flaw - anonymous access to the RGW service alone is insufficient. The rgw_sigv4_insecure option, when set to true, re-enables the vulnerable behavior and must be set only transiently during multisite upgrades. |
| Impact | The provided CVSS 8.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) is consistent with the technical description: the attack is network-reachable, low-complexity once a presigned URL is in hand, and yields high confidentiality and integrity impact through unauthorized S3 operations. EPSS data was not supplied in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from that signal. The CVE is not listed in CISA KEV and no public POC is identified, which collectively suggest opportunistic exploitation is not yet widespread. The real-world risk is deployment-context sensitive: organizations that distribute presigned PUT or COPY URLs to third parties, customers, or automated clients - a common S3-compatible workflow pattern - face meaningful privilege-escalation exposure, and even a moderately sized enterprise running on-premises Ceph as an S3-compatible backend should treat patching as time-sensitive. The C:H rating is credible because an attacker could append x-amz-copy-source headers to redirect a PUT into a read of another object, and I:H is credible through ACL manipulation or storage-class injection; A:N is consistent with no described denial-of-service path. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who receives a presigned PUT URL - legitimately issued by a storage application to allow an authenticated upload - modifies the HTTP request before submission by appending an unsigned x-amz-acl: public-read header or an x-amz-copy-source header pointing to a protected object. Because RGW honors the extra headers without checking that they appear in X-Amz-SignedHeaders, the object is stored with a public ACL or the protected source object's contents are read into the destination, neither action having been authorized by the URL signer. No public POC has been identified; the attack requires only standard HTTP tooling and knowledge of the SigV4 bypass. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv4 – Aug 28, 2026
Unsigned x-amz-* header injection in Ceph Object Gateway (RGW) SigV4 allows any holder of a presigned URL to attach arbitrary unsigned x-amz-* headers - such as ACL grants, copy-source directives, or storage-class overrides - that RGW silently honors without verifying they were covered by the original cryptographic signature. Affected versions are Ceph prior to 19.2.6 and prior to 20.2.4; the flaw directly enables privilege escalation beyond the permissions the URL signer intended. No public exploit code or active exploitation is confirmed at time of analysis, and vendor-released patches for both stable branches are available.

Privilege escalation in Ceph Object Gateway (RGW) versions prior to 20.2.4 and 19.2.6 allows any holder of a presigned URL to inject arbitrary unsigned x-amz-* headers that RGW will honor, bypassing the cryptographic intent of the SigV4 signature. Unlike AWS S3, which enforces that every x-amz-* header present in a request must appear in the signed X-Amz-SignedHeaders list, RGW validates only the declared headers and ignores any extras - meaning an attacker can append headers such as x-amz-acl or x-amz-grant-* to a received presigned PUT URL and gain capabilities the signer never authorized. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, but the fix is available in versions 20.2.4 and 19.2.6 and multisite deployments require a carefully sequenced upgrade procedure.
Unsigned x-amz-* header injection in Ceph Object Gateway (RGW) versions prior to 20.2.4 and 19.2.6 allows any holder of a presigned SigV4 URL to attach arbitrary x-amz-* headers that RGW will honor without verifying they are covered by the cryptographic signature. The SigV4 protocol requires every x-amz-* header to appear in the signed header set, but Ceph's get_v4_canonical_headers() validated only the declared signed headers and ignored additional ones, enabling privilege escalation beyond the permissions the URL's original signer intended. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing is confirmed at time of analysis, but exploitation requires only standard HTTP tooling and possession of a valid presigned URL.
Incomplete SigV4 signature verification in Ceph's RADOS Gateway (RGW) allows any holder of a presigned PUT URL to inject arbitrary unsigned x-amz-* headers, which RGW accepts and applies as though they were authorized, escalating the URL's effective permissions beyond what the signer intended. All Ceph RGW deployments prior to Tentacle 20.2.4 or Squid 19.2.6 are affected wherever SigV4-signed presigned PUT URLs are in use. The impact is high confidentiality and integrity loss - an attacker can read objects accessible to the signer's identity via x-amz-copy-source injection and overwrite or alter ACLs via x-amz-acl - with no public exploit code identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV listing.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Ceph to version 20.2.4 (Tentacle) or 19.2.6 (Squid), which contain the validated fix per vendor advisory at https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/security/CVE-2026-54330 and commits https://github.com/ceph/ceph/commit/5837aa8e60471128dbb672b0ff6f1b1feebe08a7 and https://github.com/ceph/ceph/commit/5978c866d4a0812fbb024745c4f1e79aaecd6c6a. Critical upgrade sequencing for multisite operators: before upgrading any cluster, set the advanced option rgw_sigv4_insecure = true (runtime flag, no restart required) to prevent the patched RGW from rejecting the improperly-signed requests that the pre-patch Ceph multisite REST client generates. Once all clusters in the multisite topology are running 19.2.6 or 20.2.4, set rgw_sigv4_insecure = false to re-enable strict enforcement. Leaving rgw_sigv4_insecure = true permanently is not acceptable as it re-exposes the vulnerability. If patching is not immediately possible, restrict presigned URL distribution to fully trusted internal consumers and audit S3 bucket policies to minimize the blast radius of unauthorized x-amz-acl or x-amz-copy-source manipulation.
Affected ProductsAI
Ceph Object Gateway (RGW) in all Ceph releases prior to version 19.2.6 in the Squid stable branch and prior to version 20.2.4 in the Tentacle stable branch are confirmed affected. The vulnerability is localized to the SigV4 authentication path in src/rgw/rgw_auth_s3.cc. Vendor advisories are published at https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/security/CVE-2026-54330 and the GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-rmjq-ffrm-j6vj. No CPE strings were provided in the input data; affected versions are confirmed by the fix commits and vendor release notes.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Ceph RGW implements the AWS S3 SigV4 request-signing protocol, which requires every x-amz-* and host header present in a request to appear in the X-Amz-SignedHeaders parameter and be covered by the HMAC-SHA256 signature over the canonical request. The root cause (CWE-347, Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature) is that RGW's get_v4_canonical_headers() function in src/rgw/rgw_auth_s3.cc validated only the headers enumerated in X-Amz-SignedHeaders and did not iterate over all x-amz-* headers actually present in the incoming request to confirm each was signed. The fix, visible in commit 5837aa8e, adds an explicit loop over the request environment that rejects any HTTP_X_AMZ_* key absent from the canonical signed-header map unless the new rgw_sigv4_insecure option is set. A side-effect complication exists: the Ceph multisite REST client itself was generating non-compliant signatures, requiring the escape-hatch option during cross-version upgrade windows.
