Attacker must control the sender (PR:L, AV:L); --relative mode traversal yields arbitrary writes (I:H) and potential file destruction or corruption (A:H); no confidentiality impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

rsync before 3.5.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows a malicious sender to write files outside the intended destination directory tree by crafting relative paths with symlink components in --relative mode. The make_path() function follows symlinks pointing outside the destination tree while creating intermediate directories without verifying that created paths remain within the destination boundary, enabling arbitrary file writes on the receiver's filesystem.

AnalysisAI

Path traversal in rsync before 3.5.0 allows a malicious sender to write arbitrary files outside the receiver's intended destination directory by exploiting symlink following in --relative mode. The make_path() function creates intermediate directories while following symlinks without enforcing that resolved paths stay within the destination tree boundary, enabling controlled file writes to arbitrary locations on the receiver's filesystem. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Attacker controls or compromises rsync sender
Delivery
Craft relative path with embedded symlink escaping destination tree
Exploit
Initiate transfer to receiver with --relative mode enabled
Execution
make_path() follows symlink outside destination boundary
Persist
Write attacker-controlled file content to arbitrary receiver filesystem path
Impact
Achieve persistence or privilege escalation via overwritten config or key file

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires two concrete conditions: (1) the receiver must invoke rsync with the --relative mode flag active (either explicitly via -R/--relative or implicitly through certain wrapper configurations), and (2) the attacker must control or compromise the sending side of the rsync transfer - acting as the malicious sender. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:H) places attack vector as Local and requires Low privileges, meaning the attacker must already be or control the sending side of an rsync session. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker who controls a malicious rsync sender (e.g., a compromised mirror server or rogue backup endpoint) initiates a transfer to a victim receiver with --relative mode active. The sender crafts a file path containing a symlink component that resolves outside the destination tree, such as a relative path traversing through a symlink pointing to /etc. …
Remediation Upgrade to rsync 3.5.0 or later, which is confirmed as the vendor-released patch per the GitHub release at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0 and the upstream NEWS file at https://download.samba.org/pub/rsync/NEWS#3.5.0. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Threat intelligence, references, and detailed analysis are available after sign-in.
