DescriptionCVE.org

rsync before 3.5.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows remote clients to access files outside the intended module root when use chroot is disabled and the module root path or a component of it is a symlink. The daemon calls chdir() to the module root at session initialization without resolving symlinks via realpath() or equivalent, causing subsequent relative-path operations to reference files relative to the symlink target rather than the intended module root, enabling unauthorized file access.

AnalysisAI

Path traversal in rsync daemon before 3.5.0 allows remote rsync clients to read and write files outside the configured module root. The root cause is the daemon calling chdir() to the module root at session start without resolving symlinks via realpath(), so if the module root path or any path component is a symlink, subsequent relative-path operations resolve against the symlink target instead of the intended directory. …

Impact
Read or overwrite files outside module root

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Two specific server-side conditions must both be true: (1) The rsyncd.conf module has use chroot = false - this is a non-default setting that administrators explicitly configure, often to support hardlinks or ACLs. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.4 reflects high confidentiality and integrity impact, but real-world risk is strongly gated by two non-default server-side conditions: use chroot must be explicitly disabled, and a symlink must exist in the module root path. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker with rsync client credentials (or anonymous access if the module permits it) connects to a daemon where use chroot = false and the module root /srv/rsync-share is a symlink to /data/files. The attacker requests relative paths such as ../../etc/shadow or ../../root/.ssh/authorized_keys; the daemon resolves these relative to /data/files rather than /srv/rsync-share, returning sensitive files outside the intended share. …
Remediation Vendor-released patch: rsync 3.5.0, available at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, audit all rsync daemon instances in production to identify those running versions prior to 3.5.0 and confirm chroot status in rsync.conf (check for 'use chroot = no' or equivalent). …
