The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

FFmpeg version 7.0 or later must be used to process a crafted IAMF audio file through the iamf_writer.c encoder/muxer code path, specifically triggering the extradata padding logic with oversized or malformed data. IAMF support must be active (compiled in and invoked), which is the default in FFmpeg builds from v.7.0 onward. Exploitation is strictly limited to denial of service (process crash); no memory disclosure, code execution, or data integrity impact is demonstrated by the available data. In interactive use, a user must open or transcode the crafted file. In server-side pipelines accepting user uploads, the attacker can trigger the crash remotely by submitting the malicious file without needing authenticated access to the server.

Impact

The CVSS 6.2 score (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) reflects a local denial-of-service with no confidentiality or integrity compromise. The local attack vector (AV:L) is the primary mitigating factor: exploitation requires the attacker to present a crafted IAMF file to FFmpeg, which may occur directly on a desktop or via a server-side automated media processing pipeline. EPSS of 0.17% at the 7th percentile is consistent with a low-to-moderate real-world exploitation probability. No KEV listing and no public exploit code have been identified. For services that accept user-supplied media uploads and transcode them automatically (e.g., video hosting, broadcast tooling), the practical attack surface expands because a remote user can trigger the local crash by submitting a crafted file. For interactive desktop use, a user must explicitly open the crafted file. Overall, this is a genuine but narrow denial-of-service risk, higher priority for unattended media processing pipelines than for general desktop deployments.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker uploads or provides a crafted IAMF audio file with malformed extradata to an automated transcoding service running FFmpeg 7.0+. When FFmpeg processes the file through the iamf_writer.c component, the malformed extradata triggers a buffer overflow during padding operations, corrupting memory and crashing the FFmpeg process. The transcoding service experiences a denial of service; in a pipeline without job isolation, repeated submission of the crafted file could sustainably disrupt the service.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 07, 2026

Buffer overflow in FFmpeg v.7.0 and later within the libavformat/iamf_writer.c component allows an attacker to crash the process by supplying a crafted IAMF (Immersive Audio Model and Formats) file, resulting in a denial of service. The flaw, rooted in improper bounds checking during extradata padding operations (CWE-120), affects the IAMF audio encoder/writer path introduced alongside IAMF support in FFmpeg 7.0. A patch commit (8439e020) and upstream pull request #22988 are available, though a tagged release incorporating the fix has not been independently confirmed. No public exploit code has been identified and EPSS of 0.17% (7th percentile) reflects low exploitation probability at this time.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to rebuild or update to a version of FFmpeg that incorporates git commit 8439e0203744a30d280668fcd086f74ed5001da1, available via the upstream pull request at https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/pulls/22988. A specific tagged release version is not independently confirmed at time of analysis; monitor the FFmpeg release page for the next version cut after this commit. As a compensating control, operators of automated media pipelines should restrict accepted input formats to exclude IAMF (if not operationally required), eliminating exposure to this specific code path with no functional trade-off for non-spatial-audio workflows. Running FFmpeg in a sandboxed environment (e.g., seccomp, container with resource limits) will contain crash impact to the isolated process and prevent a DoS from affecting the broader service. Pre-screening uploaded files for valid IAMF structure before full processing reduces the attack surface but is not a reliable standalone mitigation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

FFmpeg 7.0 introduced native IAMF (Immersive Audio Model and Formats) support, an emerging spatial/immersive audio standard. The vulnerable code resides in libavformat/iamf_writer.c, which handles encoding and muxing of IAMF audio streams. The root cause is CWE-120 (Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input): the writer does not properly validate buffer size boundaries during extradata padding operations, allowing a crafted IAMF input to trigger an out-of-bounds write. The CVSS vector AV:L reflects that exploitation requires a malicious file to be processed by the FFmpeg binary rather than a direct network-reachable service. The CPE provided in the source data (cpe:2.3:a:n/a:n/a:*) is a placeholder; the real product is FFmpeg by the FFmpeg project, affecting v.7.0 and all subsequent releases prior to the upstream fix.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
