DescriptionCVE.org

MyBB is free and open source forum software. Prior to 1.8.40, the Admin CP Security Questions module does not validate the anti-CSRF token correctly, allowing same-site attackers to enable or disable registration challenge questions with a specially crafted URL. The controller processes GET requests for the disable and enable actions to modify mybb_questions.active without verifying the my_post_key token attached by the user interface. The uniquely identifying implementation details include admin/modules/config/questions.php. This issue is fixed in version 1.8.40.

AnalysisAI

Cross-site request forgery in MyBB's Admin CP Security Questions module (versions prior to 1.8.40) permits same-site attackers to toggle registration challenge questions on or off by tricking an authenticated administrator into visiting a specially crafted URL. The vulnerable controller in admin/modules/config/questions.php accepted GET requests for enable and disable actions and directly modified the mybb_questions.active database field without calling verify_post_check() against the my_post_key anti-CSRF token. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires three concurrent conditions: (1) the attacker must be a same-site actor - either a registered forum user or someone able to cause the admin's browser to issue a request from the same web origin; (2) an administrator must be authenticated to the MyBB Admin CP in the same browser session and must be induced to follow the crafted URL (UI:R); and (3) the target MyBB installation must be running a version prior to 1.8.40 with the Security Questions module present. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 base score of 3.5 (Low) accurately reflects the constrained real-world risk: the only achievable outcome is toggling the active status of registration bot-protection challenge questions, with no confidentiality or availability impact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade to MyBB 1.8.40 or later, which is the vendor-released patch confirmed at https://mybb.com/versions/1.8.40 and https://github.com/mybb/mybb/releases/tag/mybb_1840. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
