Simple Machines Forum (SMF) through 2.1.7, fixed in commit 6f0dc61, contains an authorization state-confusion vulnerability in the profile loader that allows authenticated low-privileged users to gain administrator access by supplying multiple values for the user parameter. Attackers can exploit the mismatch between Profile::$member and User::$me->is_owner during sequential profile loading to be treated as the owner of an administrator profile, enabling unauthorized password changes and full account takeover.
AnalysisAI
Authorization state-confusion in Simple Machines Forum (SMF) through version 2.1.7 enables any authenticated low-privileged user to escalate privileges to administrator without possessing admin credentials. The vulnerability stems from a mismatch between Profile::$member and User::$me->is_owner during sequential profile loading when multiple values are supplied for the user parameter, tricking the application into treating the attacker as the owner of an administrator profile and granting access to password-change functionality. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an authenticated session with at minimum a low-privileged (regular member) account on the target SMF installation - the CVSS vector PR:L confirms unauthenticated access is not sufficient. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.6 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) is well-calibrated: network-accessible exploitation with low complexity, requiring only a low-privileged account and no user interaction accurately characterizes the attack surface. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Apply the upstream fix from commit 6f0dc61 (https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF/commit/6f0dc61958aa86a4b436a222f6176812ed5bbb95), which replaces all Profile::load() invocations with Profile::loadMember() across 17+ action files including Admin/Features.php, Admin/Registration.php, PersonalMessage.php, and all Profile/* action handlers. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
