2DescriptionCVE.org
RTU500 has a vulnerability, where high-load scenarios, such as sending GI requests at short intervals, may cause a NULL pointer dereference in the last entry of the enhanced message queue. This can cause a BCI_IEC104 fatal write error, resulting in connection interruption and restart, and ultimately a denial of service for bidirectional IEC 60870-5-104 communication.
AnalysisAI
Denial of service in Hitachi Energy RTU500 Series CMU firmware allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to crash the IEC 60870-5-104 communication process by flooding the device with General Interrogation (GI) requests at short intervals. The high-load condition triggers a NULL pointer dereference in the last entry of the enhanced message queue, causing a BCI_IEC104 fatal write error, connection interruption, and automatic restart - severing bidirectional telecontrol communication. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires the ability to reach the RTU500's IEC 60870-5-104 TCP endpoint (typically port 2404) from the network, and the ability to send General Interrogation (GI) requests at a sufficiently high rate to create a high-load condition in the enhanced message queue. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | CVSS 5.9 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H accurately reflects the limited but targeted impact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Consult the Hitachi Energy advisory at https://publisher.hitachienergy.com/preview?DocumentID=8DBD000259&LanguageCode=en&DocumentPartId=&Action=Launch for patched firmware versions - no specific fixed version number is available from the NVD CPE data. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
