Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the attacker hold at least low-privileged authenticated access to the IBM WebSphere Application Server SOAP endpoint (PR:L per CVSS vector). The vulnerability is triggered specifically through the SOAP request processing pipeline - deployments that expose SOAP endpoints to untrusted authenticated users are directly at risk. The 'blind' nature limits direct data exfiltration: the attacker cannot read server responses, only infer internal network behavior through side channels. Additional risk elevation applies in cloud environments where IMDSv1 is enabled (no token required) or where internal services are reachable from the WAS host without authentication. Exploitation is limited by: (1) the requirement for valid credentials, (2) the blind nature ruling out direct response-body theft, and (3) the need for the SOAP processing path to be reachable from the attacker's access context.

Impact

The NVD-assigned CVSS 3.1 score of 5.4 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N reflects the authenticated nature of the attack (PR:L), which meaningfully constrains the threat surface to users or service accounts with valid credentials to the SOAP endpoint. No KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept further reduce near-term risk. That said, SSRF vulnerabilities carry elevated contextual risk in cloud-hosted or hybrid environments where metadata services (IMDSv1-style) are accessible, and WAS deployments behind WAFs that do not inspect outbound server requests could be quietly abused for internal reconnaissance. The S:U (unchanged scope) designation in the official vector is arguably conservative - SSRF fundamentally causes the vulnerable system to interact with other systems on behalf of the attacker, a dynamic more consistent with S:C. The I:L metric in the official vector also deserves scrutiny: direct data-write impact from blind SSRF is unclear. Real-world priority is moderate: authentication requirement and blind nature reduce urgency, but patching remains the correct response given WAS's enterprise footprint.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated user or compromised service account submits a crafted SOAP request to the WebSphere endpoint with an internal URL (e.g., an internal microservice, database admin UI, or cloud metadata endpoint) embedded in the message payload. The WAS server processes the SOAP body and issues an outbound HTTP request to that internal target. By observing differences in response latency or error messages returned by WAS, the attacker infers whether internal hosts are alive and which ports are open, effectively using the WAS host as a pivot for internal network reconnaissance without needing direct connectivity.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 15, 2026

Blind server-side request forgery (SSRF) in IBM WebSphere Application Server 8.5 and 9.0 enables authenticated remote attackers to issue arbitrary internal HTTP requests by embedding malicious URLs within crafted SOAP messages processed by the server. Although the response is not directly returned to the attacker ('blind' SSRF), an adversary can exploit timing discrepancies and error differences to map internal network topology, probe cloud instance metadata endpoints (e.g., AWS IMDSv1), or reach services otherwise inaccessible from the public internet. No public exploit code has been identified and this CVE is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released patch documented in IBM's security bulletin at https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7286610; this is the primary and recommended remediation. The bulletin specifies exact fix pack levels for both the 8.5 and 9.0 release streams - patch to the minimum fixed fix pack indicated. As compensating controls while patching is scheduled: restrict outbound HTTP/HTTPS connectivity from WAS hosts at the network perimeter to only explicitly required destinations (egress filtering), which limits the attacker's ability to reach arbitrary internal services even if the SSRF is triggered. If running in a cloud environment, enforce IMDSv2 (token-required metadata service) to prevent metadata endpoint abuse via SSRF. Disabling SOAP endpoint access for untrusted authenticated roles, if the application architecture permits, reduces the attack surface. Each control has trade-offs: egress filtering may break legitimate integrations and requires careful inventory; IMDSv2 enforcement is cloud-provider-specific and must be validated against all instance roles.

Technical ContextAI · show details

IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) is a Java EE-based enterprise application server. The vulnerability resides in the server's SOAP request processing pipeline (CWE-918, Server-Side Request Forgery), where user-supplied input embedded in SOAP message bodies can influence the destination of outbound HTTP connections initiated by the server itself. Because the server acts as a request proxy from the perspective of the internal network, backend systems that block direct external access may still be reachable via the WAS host. The 'blind' qualifier indicates no response body is returned to the attacker - exploitation relies on side-channel inference (timing, error codes, or behavioral differences). Affected products are identified via CPE cpe:2.3:a:ibm:websphere_application_server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering both the 8.5 and 9.0 release trains.
