| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires three concrete conditions, all stated in the advisory: (1) the application must use Echo's WWWRedirect() or NonWWWRedirect() middleware (including their WithConfig variants) - the HTTPSRedirect, HTTPSWWWRedirect, and HTTPSNonWWWRedirect variants hardcode https:// and are NOT affected; (2) the deployment must allow the attacker-controlled X-Forwarded-Proto, X-Forwarded-Protocol, or X-Url-Scheme header to reach the app, i.e. there is no edge proxy that overwrites or strips these headers; and (3) per CVSS UI:R, a victim must act on the manipulated redirect response for impact to materialize. Confirmed injectable schemes include javascript, data, vbscript, file, ftp, ssh, telnet, and gopher. These limiting factors (specific middleware, proxy header handling, and required user interaction) substantially narrow realistic exposure below what AV:N alone suggests. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-to-moderate priority issue despite the network attack vector, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 4.7 (Medium), driven down by AC:H and UI:R: the vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, meaning no authentication is required (PR:N) but exploitation depends on conditions outside the attacker's sole control and on a victim acting on the manipulated redirect response. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', signaling a scheduled-remediation rather than emergency posture. No EPSS probability, no CISA KEV listing, and no SSVC automatable/technical-impact breakdown were supplied, so widespread or automated exploitation cannot be inferred - absence of these is not evidence of safety, only of unmeasured likelihood. A concrete proof-of-concept (a crafted GET with X-Forwarded-Proto: javascript yielding Location: javascript://www.example.com/path) is published in the GHSA advisory and was manually verified against a live server by the reporter, so the mechanism is real and demonstrated, but this is CWE-601 open redirect, not direct code execution on the server. Real risk is bounded by the limiting conditions below (specific middleware in use, app not behind a header-stripping proxy, and a user following the redirect), which is why this is a 'patch on normal cadence' item, not a drop-everything one. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends a request to an Echo app that uses the WWWRedirect or NonWWWRedirect middleware and is deployed where the X-Forwarded-Proto header is not stripped by an edge proxy, setting that header to an attacker-chosen scheme such as javascript, data, or file. Echo's Context.Scheme() returns the value verbatim and the middleware builds a Location header like 'javascript://www.example.com/path'. A public PoC demonstrating this is published in the GHSA advisory; actual harm (e.g. script execution, cache poisoning behind a caching CDN) requires a victim's browser to act on the returned redirect, consistent with the AC:H/UI:R metrics. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Echo's WWWRedirect() and NonWWWRedirect() middlewares build the Location header from Context.Scheme(), which returns the raw value of the X-Forwarded-Proto, X-Forwarded-Protocol or X-Url-Scheme request header without checking it is a web scheme, so an attacker who controls that header can make the redirect point at an arbitrary URI scheme such as javascript, data, file or gopher. Applications built on github.com/labstack/echo/v4 before 4.15.2 or /v5 before 5.1.1 are affected only if they mount one of those two redirect middlewares and run without an edge proxy that overwrites or strips the forwarded-scheme headers; the HTTPSRedirect, HTTPSWWWRedirect and HTTPSNonWWWRedirect variants hardcode https:// and are unaffected. The advisory documents a public proof-of-concept request verified against a live server, and per the CVSS vector (AC:H, UI:R) a victim must also interact with the manipulated redirect for impact, which keeps realistic exposure narrow; KEV status was not provided.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to the vendor-released patch: github.com/labstack/echo/v4 v4.15.2 or github.com/labstack/echo/v5 v5.1.1, which add an isValidProto() allowlist so Context.Scheme() only accepts http, https, ws or wss from the forwarded-scheme headers and defaults to http otherwise, as described in advisory GHSA-23wf-92cp-8pcj and the release tags linked above. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the vendor's stated workaround is to have the edge proxy overwrite or remove the X-Forwarded-Proto, X-Forwarded-Protocol and X-Url-Scheme request headers on inbound traffic, with the trade-off that applications relying on those headers for correct absolute-URL generation behind TLS termination will then construct http:// links unless the proxy sets a trusted value itself. Applications that only need to force HTTPS can additionally avoid the vulnerable pattern by using HTTPSRedirect, HTTPSWWWRedirect or HTTPSNonWWWRedirect, which hardcode https:// and are unaffected; CDNs caching redirect responses keyed by path should also be reviewed for cache poisoning potential.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Echo is a Go HTTP web framework, and the flaw lives in the interaction between its context helper and its redirect middleware. Context.Scheme() (context.go) prefers the TLS state, then falls back to reading the X-Forwarded-Proto, X-Forwarded-Protocol and X-Url-Scheme headers so that applications behind a TLS-terminating proxy still generate correct absolute URLs; the pre-fix code returned whatever string those headers contained verbatim. WWWRedirect()/NonWWWRedirect() (middleware/redirect.go) use that returned scheme to construct an absolute redirect target and write it into the Location response header, so header-controlled scheme text is reflected into a redirect. This is CWE-601 (URL Redirection to Untrusted Site / open redirect), with the added wrinkle that non-HTTP schemes are reachable: the advisory confirms javascript, data, vbscript, file, ftp, ssh, telnet and gopher can be injected. The fix introduces an isValidProto() helper that accepts only http, https, ws and wss (case-insensitive) from those three headers and otherwise falls back to http, plus a reworked test suite covering TLS precedence, case handling and invalid-value fallback to the next header. The bug class is a trust-boundary violation: proxy-supplied metadata is treated as authoritative without a server-side allowlist.

No auth needed (PR:N) but exploitation depends on affected middleware and a non-stripping proxy (AC:H) plus the victim following the redirect (UI:R); scope changes into the client (S:C) with limited C/I impact.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Echo is a Go web framework. Prior to 4.15.2 and 5.1.1, Context.Scheme returns values from X-Forwarded-Proto, X-Forwarded-Protocol, or X-Url-Scheme without validating that they are supported web schemes. WWWRedirect and NonWWWRedirect use that value to construct a Location header, so an attacker controlling a forwarded scheme header can cause a redirect to use an arbitrary URI scheme. Exploitation requires an affected redirect middleware and user interaction with the response; the HTTPS-specific redirect variants hardcode HTTPS and are unaffected. This issue is fixed in 4.15.2 and 5.1.1.
