MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The victim must be running Epiphany in the affected range (>= 45.0 through 51.x) and must both visit the attacker's page and click Allow on a Clipboard or Website Data Access permission dialog - those are the only prompt types that route into the buggy else-if branch. No browser authentication is required (PR:N), but the mandatory Allow click (UI:R) and the fact that only those two permission dialogs trigger the bug meaningfully limit exploitation: a user who denies or ignores the prompt is not affected, and the site must present a convincing pretext for clipboard or third-party storage access. The only complete fix per the vendor is updating to the patched build (merge request 2249 / commit 480c3648); no configuration mitigation is described in the sources. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditional authorization-bypass (CWE-863) in GNOME's Epiphany/Web browser, best characterized as medium real-world risk rather than an emergency. The CVSS 3.1 base of 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) is internally consistent with the described mechanism: exploitation is network-reachable via a malicious web page, needs no authentication to the browser, but does require user interaction - the victim must click Allow on a clipboard or website-data-access permission dialog. The impact is confidentiality-only (C:H, I:N, A:N), which matches silent camera/microphone capture with no integrity or availability effect. No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is not on CISA KEV, and no exploit or PoC reference appears in the input (the GitLab merge request and commit are the fix, not an exploit), so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', not act_now/emergency, and the signals agree - a real authorization flaw gated behind a deceptive-but-required user click, not mass-exploitable drive-by code execution. The main caveat is that the fix commit (480c3648) publicly discloses the exact one-line logic error, lowering the bar to reproduce, so defenders should patch within the vendor's expected cadence rather than treat it as low priority indefinitely. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A victim using Epiphany visits an attacker-controlled page that presents a plausible reason to grant clipboard or third-party (website-data-access) permission and clicks Allow. Because set_permission() wrongly records EPHY_PERMISSION_PERMIT for both webcam and microphone for that origin, the site can then call getUserMedia() and capture audio/video with no further prompt. No public exploit code is referenced; the attack requires the social-engineering step of obtaining that single Allow click (UI:R). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 31, 2026
Epiphany (GNOME Web) 45.0 through 51.x writes a stored PERMIT for both the webcam and microphone permission of a site origin whenever a user answers an unrelated Clipboard or Website Data Access prompt, so the site can call getUserMedia afterwards without a dedicated camera/microphone dialog and capture audio and video. The root cause is a malformed else-if in set_permission() of src/ephy-window.c whose condition is a non-zero enum constant, making the branch unconditional for the two permission types that the permissions manager does not persist. Exploitation is conditional: the victim must visit the attacker's page and click Allow on a clipboard or third-party storage prompt (CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, 6.5, CWE-863), and no public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
The only complete fix per the vendor is to update Epiphany to a build containing upstream merge request 2249 (commit 480c3648, linked from https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/epiphany/-/merge_requests/2249); track distribution updates via the Fedora/Red Hat entries at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2562956 and https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-118598, since no released patch version number is given in the sources. No configuration-level mitigation (for example, disabling the clipboard or website-data-access prompts, or clearing stored site permissions after browsing) is described in the available sources, so administrators of managed fleets should plan on the patched build rather than a settings workaround. Until patched, the exposure is bounded by the assessed preconditions: the victim must both load the attacker's page and click Allow on a Clipboard or Website Data Access prompt, so denying or dismissing those prompts avoids the path described in the assessment, and users should be discouraged from granting clipboard or third-party storage access to untrusted sites.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Epiphany delegates site permission prompts to WebKit and then persists the user's Allow/Deny decision in set_permission() (src/ephy-window.c). The helper ephy_permission_is_stored_by_permissions_manager() does not store EPHY_PERMISSION_TYPE_CLIPBOARD or EPHY_PERMISSION_TYPE_WEBSITE_DATA_ACCESS, so those two dialog results fall through to the follow-on else-if chain. That chain tested the bare enum constant EPHY_PERMISSION_TYPE_ACCESS_WEBCAM_AND_MICROPHONE instead of comparing the incoming permission type against it; because the enum value is non-zero, the condition evaluated true for every type reaching it, and the code wrote EPHY_PERMISSION_PERMIT for both EPHY_PERMISSION_TYPE_ACCESS_WEBCAM and EPHY_PERMISSION_TYPE_ACCESS_MICROPHONE against the current site origin. This is an incorrect-authorization defect (CWE-863): the permission store records a grant the user never saw or approved, and the API-level check inside WebKit then succeeds silently, bypassing the getUserMedia consent prompt that would otherwise protect audiovisual capture. The flaw is present from release 45.0 onward, at least through 51.x, per the upstream work item and the GNOME Epiphany CPE (cpe:2.3:a:gnome:epiphany).

DescriptionCVE.org
A logic error in Epiphany's site permission handling can cause camera and microphone access to be granted when the user only approves a different permission.
In src/ephy-window.c, set_permission() stores the user's Allow/Deny choice after a WebKit permission dialog. Types CLIPBOARD and WEBSITE_DATA_ACCESS are not stored by ephy_permission_is_stored_by_permissions_manager(), so control fell into an else-if that was written as:
} else if (EPHY_PERMISSION_TYPE_ACCESS_WEBCAM_AND_MICROPHONE) {
Because that expression is a non-zero enum constant, the branch always ran for those types and wrote EPHY_PERMISSION_PERMIT for both ACCESS_WEBCAM and ACCESS_MICROPHONE for the site origin. The user only saw a Clipboard or Website Data Access dialog.
A malicious site that obtains approval for clipboard or third-party storage access can afterwards use getUserMedia without a further camera/microphone prompt, exposing audiovisual confidentiality.
Requirements: the victim must visit a malicious page and click Allow on a clipboard or website-data-access prompt.
