| Exploitation Conditions | The application must use the vertx-stomp module and run either a Vert.x STOMP server or STOMP client reachable by an untrusted peer. For the server case, no authentication or special configuration is required - the description explicitly states a malicious client can exploit it before or after authentication against default parsing behaviour (FrameParser builds its RecordParser with no maxRecordSize). For the client case, the victim client must connect to an attacker-controlled STOMP server. The only real limiting factor is that the vulnerable vertx-stomp module must be deployed and exposed to a peer the attacker controls; affected versions are [4.0.0, 4.5.35] and [5.0.0, 5.2.2]. There is no complete mitigation other than upgrading: fixed in 4.5.36 (4.x branch) and 5.2.3 (5.x branch). |
| Impact | All impact signals point to availability only: the CVSS 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H scores 7.5 (High) driven entirely by A:H, with no confidentiality or integrity loss. The network vector, low attack complexity, and PR:N mean a remote unauthenticated peer can trigger it - and the description confirms a malicious client can hit a server before or after authentication, while a malicious server can hit a connecting client. No EPSS score was supplied, this CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit was identified, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; the trigger (streaming bytes without a newline so RecordParser accumulates unbounded) is simple and well described, which keeps the barrier to building an exploit low even though none is published. The vuln.today priority is this_week, consistent with a serious but non-emergency DoS: real priority for anyone running the vertx-stomp module exposed to untrusted peers, but lower urgency than a code-execution or data-exposure flaw. Key missing data: no EPSS, no SSVC decision-framework breakdown, and no KEV/POC signals to corroborate exploitation likelihood - prioritization rests on the CVSS vector, the clear mechanism, and the this_week label. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker opens a STOMP connection to a Vert.x STOMP server (no authentication required) and streams bytes continuously without ever sending a newline, forcing the FrameParser's RecordParser to buffer the stream indefinitely until the JVM heap is exhausted and the process crashes. The same works in reverse: a malicious STOMP server can crash a connecting Vert.x STOMP client. No public exploit code was identified, but the technique requires only a raw socket and a byte stream. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Heap exhaustion in the vertx-stomp module (Eclipse Vert.x) allows any connected peer to crash the affected JVM process, causing a complete denial of service; versions 4.0.0 through 4.5.35 and 5.0.0 through 5.2.2 are affected. Because FrameParser builds its RecordParser without a maxRecordSize limit, a peer that streams bytes without ever sending a newline makes the parser buffer indefinitely until JVM heap is exhausted. Both roles are exposed: a malicious STOMP client can attack a server before or after authentication, and a malicious STOMP server can attack a client that connects to it. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the flaw is remotely reachable without authentication or user interaction (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5 High) and vendor fixes exist in 4.5.36 and 5.2.3.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade io.vertx:vertx-stomp to 4.5.36 on the 4.x branch or 5.2.3 on the 5.x branch, which sets a bounded maxRecordSize on the FrameParser's RecordParser. The independent assessment notes there is no complete mitigation other than upgrading, so no configuration toggle or feature flag fully removes the exposure for versions in the affected ranges. Remediation guidance and affected-version details are in the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/vert-x3/vertx-stomp/security/advisories/GHSA-cchp-hff9-j7q7; change tracking is at https://gitlab.eclipse.org/security/cve-assignment/-/work_items/521 and https://gitlab.eclipse.org/security/vulnerability-reports/-/work_items/864. Because exploitation requires only that a vulnerable STOMP endpoint be reachable by an untrusted peer, prioritise internet-facing STOMP servers and client applications that connect to third-party STOMP brokers, and verify the deployed vertx-stomp version in your dependency tree before assuming the fix is present.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is the STOMP protocol implementation inside Eclipse Vert.x (maven artifact io.vertx:vertx-stomp). STOMP is a simple text-based frame protocol in which commands, headers and body are delimited by newline characters and terminated by a NUL byte, so the parser must buffer incoming bytes until it encounters a delimiter. FrameParser constructs a Vert.x RecordParser for this purpose but does not configure maxRecordSize, leaving the record buffer effectively unbounded. This is a CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) weakness: there is no cap on how much memory a single connection may consume while awaiting a delimiter, so a peer that sends a continuous byte stream with no newline forces the accumulation of data until the heap is exhausted and the process terminates. The defect is symmetric - the same parser code path is used by the Vert.x STOMP server and the Vert.x STOMP client - which is why both malicious clients and malicious servers are viable attackers. The CPE entry (cpe:2.3:a:eclipse_foundation:eclipse_vert.x) reflects the Vert.x project as the affected product family, with the vulnerable artifact being the STOMP submodule rather than the core Vert.x runtime; applications that do not deploy vertx-stomp are not exposed through this issue.

DescriptionCVE.org
In Eclipse Vert.x versions [4.0.0, 4.5.35] or [5.0.0, 5.2.2], the FrameParser in vertx-stomp creates a RecordParser without setting maxRecordSize, so any peer that streams bytes continuously without a newline character causes the parser to accumulate data indefinitely. Both the STOMP server and the STOMP client are affected: a malicious server can exploit this against a connecting client, and a malicious client can exploit this against a server before or after authentication. Sustained byte streaming exhausts JVM heap memory, crashing the affected process and causing a complete denial of service.

Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-118487 is a high-severity heap exhaustion flaw in Eclipse Vert.x's vertx-stomp module that allows any connected peer to crash the JVM, causing complete denial of service. Organizations running affected versions (4.0.0-4.5.35 or 5.0.0-5.2.2) in STOMP server or client roles are at risk of service outages from unauthenticated attackers. Leadership should prioritize patching to prevent operational disruption and potential SLA breaches.
