| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated low-privileged account able to set its own first and last name, and is limited to installations where the friendship system is enabled AND the display name format is built from first and last name (per the GHSA). A separate authenticated victim must actively click the Friends button on the attacker's profile or People entry for the payload to fire - there is no self-triggering path. Limiting factors: required low-privilege authentication (PR:L), mandatory victim interaction (UI:A), and dependence on the above non-universal display-name/friendship configuration. Vendor-stated mitigations are to disable 'Enable user friendship system' under Administration > Settings > General, set the display name format to the username under Administration > Settings > Appearance, review existing names for HTML markup, and upgrade to 1.18.7 or 1.19.1 (or later), which the vendor presents as the complete fix. |
| Impact | Severity signals cluster in the high-but-conditional band rather than the drop-everything band. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (7.2, High) encodes network reach (AV:N) and low attack complexity (AC:L) but is tempered by three dampeners: PR:L (the attacker must hold a registered low-privileged account), UI:A (a second user must actively click the Friends button on the attacker's profile or People entry), and AT:P (an attack requirement - exploitation depends on that victim interaction occurring). No EPSS score was supplied, so statistical exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified. The CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no SSVC exploitation value was provided; the only prioritization signal is the vuln.today Decision label 'this_week', which is consistent with a High-severity stored XSS that is not under active exploitation. The genuine aggravating factor is the victim set: because any user - including a System Administrator - who clicks Friends on the malicious profile executes the payload in their own HumHub origin, successful exploitation against an admin can escalate to full application compromise, which is why the vendor urges immediate upgrade. Net assessment: a real, patch-this-week priority for exposed HumHub instances, but not an emergency - the authentication requirement, mandatory victim interaction, and configuration dependency keep it below mass-exploitation risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged member registers (or edits their profile) and stores an HTML/script payload inside their first and last name fields. When another authenticated user - potentially a System Administrator - opens that profile or People entry and clicks the Friends button, HumHub inserts the decoded display name into the confirmation modal via jQuery html(), executing the attacker's markup in the victim's session. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, though Fluid Attacks published an advisory describing the issue. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in HumHub's friendship confirmation dialog allows an authenticated member with only basic privileges to persist arbitrary HTML in their own first and last name, which then executes in the browser session of any other logged-in user who clicks the Friends button on that profile or People entry - including administrators. Only installations with the friendship system enabled and the display-name format built from first and last name are exposed, and the victim must actively click the button for the payload to fire; no self-triggering path exists. The flaw is fixed in HumHub 1.18.7 and 1.19.1, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; severity signals place this in a high-but-conditional band rather than an emergency one.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to HumHub 1.18.7 or 1.19.1 (or any later release such as the referenced v1.19.3 tag), which the vendor presents as the complete fix - both branches add Html::encode() around the display name in the friendship confirmation strings, so no additional configuration change is required once patched. If upgrading cannot be performed promptly, the vendor documents three mitigations: disable "Enable user friendship system" under Administration > Settings > General, which removes the entire affected code path at the cost of losing the friendship feature for all users; or set the display name format to the username under Administration > Settings > Appearance, which eliminates the attacker-controlled name component but changes how every user is displayed across the site; and, in parallel, review existing first and last names for stored HTML markup and clean any that are found, since payloads already persisted will fire for unpatched users even after the setting changes unless the names themselves are corrected. No public exploit code has been identified, so the pressure to act comes from the stored nature of the payload and the administrator-level victims reachable through it rather than from observed attacks; the vendor advisory is at https://github.com/humhub/humhub/security/advisories/GHSA-ph8x-wg86-qp2m and the reporter's write-up at https://fluidattacks.com/advisories/toujours.

Technical ContextAI · show details
HumHub is a PHP social-network application built on the Yii2 framework, and the flaw is a classic instance of CWE-79 arising from an encode-at-output failure. The FriendshipButton widget built its confirmation strings by interpolating the raw result of $this->user->getDisplayName() into a Yii::t() translation message wrapped in <strong> tags, and stored the result in the data-action-confirm attribute. When a visitor clicked Friends, the client-side modal logic passed that decoded string through jQuery's html() method, which parses its argument as markup rather than text, so any tags a member had saved in their profile name were rendered and executed inside the HumHub origin. The upstream fix (PR #8624 on the 1.19 branch and PR #8625 on 1.18) wraps both the 'send a friendship request' and 'end your friendship' variants in yii\helpers\Html::encode(), applying contextual escaping at the point of output. Because the vulnerable value is a persistent profile field rather than a request parameter, the payload survives logout and is delivered to every user who interacts with the attacker's profile through this specific dialog; exploitation additionally depends on the deployment using a display-name format composed from first and last name, since a username-based format removes the attacker-controlled component.

Authenticated low-priv attacker stores the payload (PR:L) but a separate user must click Friends (UI:R); script runs in the victim's browser context, changing scope (S:C), with limited confidentiality/integrity impact and no availability impact.

2DescriptionCVE.org
HumHub Community Edition 1.19.0 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the friendship confirmation dialog. An authenticated low-privileged member can save HTML in their first and last name. When another authenticated user clicks Friends for that profile, HumHub places the decoded display name into a modal through jQuery html(), causing attacker-controlled markup to execute in the victim's HumHub origin.

Executive ViewAI
A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in HumHub's friendship confirmation dialog (CVE-2026-115541) enables any authenticated member with basic privileges to inject persistent malicious code into their profile name, which then executes in the browser sessions of other users-including administrators-when they click the Friends button. This affects only installations with the friendship system enabled and display-name format built from first and last name. Leadership should prioritize remediation because successful exploitation could lead to session hijacking or unauthorized actions within the platform, though the requirement for victim interaction and specific configuration limits the overall risk.
