1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the host embeds wasmtime-wasi-http and exposes the WASIp2 wasi:http interface to an attacker-controlled or otherwise untrusted guest module; the guest must be able to create outgoing-body resources (via outgoing-request or outgoing-response) and call write with buffers larger than the DEFAULT_OUTGOING_BODY_CHUNK_SIZE (~1M, or the embedder's customized WasiHttpHooks chunk size) returned by check-write. Affected versions are Wasmtime <36.0.16, >=37.0.0 before 48.0.3, and 49.0.0 before 49.0.1. Limiting factors: there is no remote-network trigger - the adversary must already be able to run a malicious guest; embedders that run only trusted guests, that do not expose wasi-http outgoing bodies, or that have updated to a fixed release are not exploitable. Impact is confined to availability (host memory exhaustion) with no confidentiality or integrity effect. |
| Impact | All signals point to a genuine but moderate-priority availability issue rather than an urgent emergency. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H, score 6.9 Medium) and CWE-400/CWE-770 describe a guest-driven host memory-exhaustion DoS with no confidentiality or integrity impact. The attack vector is Local (AV:L) because exploitation requires executing a malicious WebAssembly guest inside the host process - not a remote network request - even though the guest itself needs no sandbox privileges (PR:N by design, since guests are untrusted). The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', not act_now/emergency, which is consistent with a confidentiality/integrity-safe DoS. No EPSS score was provided (cannot gauge statistical exploitation likelihood), the CVE is not in CISA KEV (no confirmed active exploitation), and the only references are vendor/coordinator advisories (GHSA, NVD, VulnCheck) with no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The practical risk is bounded by a strong precondition: the embedder must expose wasmtime-wasi-http to attacker-supplied/untrusted guests. Embedders running only trusted guests face negligible real-world risk; multi-tenant or plugin-style deployments that run untrusted guests should patch promptly. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can supply or influence a WebAssembly guest running in a host that embeds wasmtime-wasi-http creates outgoing-request/outgoing-response bodies, calls wasi:io/streams.check-write to learn the ~1M allowance, and then hands write a much larger buffer, which incorrectly succeeds instead of trapping. Repeating this across many outgoing-body resources pins large host allocations for the store's lifetime, exhausting host memory and denying service. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Wasmtime's wasmtime-wasi-http crate fails to enforce the wasi:io/streams check-write allowance for WASIp2 outgoing HTTP bodies, so a malicious guest module can write buffers far larger than the advertised ~1M chunk allowance and have the host keep those allocations for the lifetime of the guest's store, exhausting host memory. Hosts that embed wasmtime-wasi-http and expose the wasi:http interface to untrusted guests and that run Wasmtime before 36.0.16, 37.0.0 through 48.0.2, or 49.0.0 are affected; impact is limited to availability, with no confidentiality or integrity effect. Vendor-released patches exist in 36.0.16, 48.0.3 and 49.0.1, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Wasmtime 36.0.16, 48.0.3, or 49.0.1 depending on the branch in use (the fix is also on the project's main branch), as documented in https://github.com/bytecodealliance/wasmtime/security/advisories/GHSA-c9gc-w9vx-w86p. Where upgrading immediately is not possible, the exposure can be reduced by not exposing the WASIp2 wasi:http interface - specifically the ability to create outgoing-request or outgoing-response resources and therefore outgoing bodies - to untrusted guest modules; the trade-off is that guests lose outgoing HTTP capability entirely, and the underlying check-write enforcement bug remains until the runtime is patched. Embedders that run only trusted guest code are not exposed and can schedule the update normally. Lowering a customized WasiHttpHooks chunk size only shrinks the per-write allowance and does not correct the missing enforcement itself, so it is not a substitute for the patched release.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Wasmtime is a WebAssembly runtime written in Rust, and wasmtime-wasi-http implements the WASIp2 wasi:http proposal on top of wasi:io/streams. In the WASIp2 streams contract, check-write returns the number of bytes a guest is currently permitted to write to an output stream, and the specification states that a subsequent write exceeding that allowance must trap. The implementation here returned a default allowance of DEFAULT_OUTGOING_BODY_CHUNK_SIZE (about 1 MiB, or whatever value an embedder has configured through its own WasiHttpHooks implementation), but did not actually validate the length of the buffer handed to write. Any guest capable of creating an outgoing-body resource - trivial via an outgoing-request or outgoing-response - can therefore force the host to accept and retain an oversize linear-memory-backed vector for the lifetime of the guest's store. Root cause is a resource-consumption class issue (CWE-400, with the advisory also classifying it as CWE-770, allocation without limits): an unbounded allocation driven by guest input, triggered only from inside the sandbox context since the attacker must already be running a guest module; there is no remote-network trigger in the described flaw.

CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N
A malicious guest runs locally in the host process (AV:L) and needs no sandbox privileges (PR:N) to drive memory exhaustion; only availability is impacted (A:H), with no confidentiality/integrity effect.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
wasmtime-wasi-http in Wasmtime before 36.0.16, 37.0.0 before 48.0.3, and 49.0.0 before 49.0.1 does not enforce the wasi:io/streams check-write allowance for WASIp2 outgoing HTTP bodies, so oversized writes succeed instead of trapping. A malicious guest can pass large buffers to write on outgoing-body resources, holding host allocations for the store's lifetime and exhausting host memory.
