1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a CLUSTERED Incus server (standalone servers are explicitly NOT affected per the vendor); an authenticated user who has been granted instance-creation rights inside a RESTRICTED project; and an instance that already exists locally and is owned by that user, against which the attacker sends a migration request with 'refresh' set. The exploit is limited to making the server open outbound TLS websocket connections and probe reachable services - the vendor states the refresh only synchronizes storage for an instance the user already owns, so no configuration or access bypass results. The primary limiting factors are the clustered-only requirement, the need for an administratively granted instance-creation role in a restricted project, and the bounded SSRF-only impact. Affected versions: 6.0.5 before 6.0.7, 6.12.0 before 7.0.2, and 7.1.0 before 7.5.0. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity authorization bypass with a server-side request forgery (SSRF) outcome, and the available signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The input CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores 5.3 and correctly reflects a network-reachable but privilege-requiring issue with only low confidentiality impact. The GHSA advisory adds CWE-918 (SSRF) alongside CWE-863 (improper authorization), confirming the mechanism: a restricted-project user with instance-creation rights can coerce the server into opening outbound TLS websocket connections to attacker-chosen URLs and probe reachable services. No EPSS score was provided (treat exploitation probability as unknown), the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV, and the references are vendor/coordinator advisories rather than verified exploit code - so there is no confirmed active exploitation and no confirmed working PoC. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', not act_now or emergency, which aligns with the signal set: real but bounded. The PR:L requirement, the clustered-only precondition, and the limited impact (probing/SSRF, with no configuration or data bypass per the vendor) place this well below the 'drop everything' tier while still warranting patching in a normal cycle. Key limiting fact stated by the vendor: standalone (non-clustered) servers are not affected at all. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a clustered Incus deployment, a tenant who has been granted instance-creation rights within a restricted project sends a migration request with 'refresh' set for an instance they already own. The clustered refresh path short-circuits past the pull-mode restriction check, causing the Incus server to open an outbound TLS websocket to an attacker-supplied URL (trusting an attacker-supplied certificate), which the attacker uses to probe internal services reachable from the server. No public working exploit code is identified at time of analysis; only vendor and coordinator advisories exist. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
An authorization bypass in Incus (the Go-based container and VM manager) allows an authenticated user holding instance-creation rights in a restricted project to reach the pull-mode migration path that restricted projects are supposed to block, by sending a clustered migration request with 'refresh' set against an instance they already own. The result is server-side request forgery: the clustered Incus daemon opens an outbound TLS websocket connection to an attacker-chosen URL and trusts an attacker-supplied certificate, letting the user probe services reachable from the server. Standalone servers are explicitly not affected, no configuration or storage bypass results from the refresh, and no public exploit has been identified at the time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a fixed release on the matching branch: 6.0.7 for the 6.0.x LTS line, 7.0.2 for the 6.12.x/7.0.x line, or 7.5.0 (and later) for 7.1.x and current releases - the upstream module go/github.com/lxc/incus/v7/cmd/incusd is fixed in >= v7.5.0. Details are in the vendor advisory GHSA-443p-7392-h4v2. The vendor-documented workaround, for clusters that cannot be patched immediately, is to stop granting instance-creation rights in restricted projects on clustered servers to users who should not be able to initiate outbound connections from the server; the trade-off is that those users can no longer create instances in those projects until the upgrade is applied.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Incus is a Go-based system container and virtual machine manager (a fork of LXD) whose daemon, incusd, exposes a REST API that is clustered across multiple members in production deployments. Restricted projects intentionally forbid pull-mode migration because pull mode makes the server itself connect to a remote URL chosen by the requesting user - effectively an SSRF primitive. That policy is enforced by the instance-creation authorization check. The flaw is an incorrect authorization decision (CWE-863) that yields a server-side request forgery outcome (CWE-918): on clustered servers, a migration request carrying 'refresh' for an instance that already exists locally takes a short-circuit straight into the migration sink, bypassing the creation-path check entirely. Notably, the refresh only re-synchronizes storage for an instance the user already owns, so no configuration bypass follows - the impact ceiling is the outbound connection itself. The upstream fix enforces the pull-mode restriction at the very start of the refresh short-circuit, before the request can be forwarded to another cluster member or the migration sink is configured. The affected Go package is go/github.com/lxc/incus/v7/cmd/incusd, vulnerable below v7.5.0 and fixed in v7.5.0 and later.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Incus 6.0.5 before 6.0.7, 6.12.0 before 7.0.2, and 7.1.0 before 7.5.0 contains a restriction bypass vulnerability that allows restricted project users to use pull mode migration via clustered refresh requests. Attackers with instance creation rights can send a refresh migration request for an existing instance to make the server open outbound TLS websocket connections and probe reachable services.
