MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a non-Windows server (Linux/Unix), because the pre-patch memory check in rcube_image::convert was gated by a 'WIN' PHP_OS test and skipped everywhere else. The thumbnail path must fall back to PHP GD (i.e. ImageMagick is not used for the conversion), and the attacker must supply an image whose large declared dimensions force GD to allocate excessive memory. Limiting factors: impact is availability-only (no data disclosure or code execution); the GD fallback must actually be in effect; and thumbnail generation is normally invoked when a logged-in user displays a message/attachment, so a victim action (opening the crafted message) is effectively needed despite the UI:N metric. |
| Impact | All signals point to a genuinely low-priority issue rather than a high-CVSS-but-overstated one. The vendor CVSS base score is 3.7 (LOW) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L - there is NO confidentiality or integrity impact and only LOW availability impact (memory exhaustion), and attack complexity is HIGH because exploitation depends on the GD fallback path on a non-Windows host. There is no KEV listing, no public exploit identified, and no EPSS score was supplied in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the data given. One caveat: the vector asserts PR:N (unauthenticated), but Roundcube thumbnail generation is driven by a user viewing message attachments, so in practice a victim with an active session must open a crafted message - meaning real-world triggering likely involves user interaction and/or an authenticated session not reflected by the PR:N/UI:N metrics; verify with vendor. Net: a resource-exhaustion DoS of limited severity, worth patching in routine maintenance, not an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker emails a Roundcube user a message containing a crafted image whose declared pixel dimensions are enormous. When the victim opens the message on a non-Windows server where thumbnail generation falls back to PHP GD, GD attempts to allocate memory for the full decoded image with no resource-limit check, exhausting server memory and degrading or crashing the service. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the attack produces only a transient denial of service. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Memory exhaustion in Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 occurs when thumbnail generation falls back to PHP GD on non-Windows servers, where a crafted image with oversized dimensions is processed without the memory check that previously applied only on Windows. The flaw is availability-only, requires the GD fallback to be in effect and a victim to trigger thumbnail rendering (for example by opening a crafted message or attachment), and carries a low CVSS score of 3.7. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 and 1.7.5, which apply the memory check on all platforms; see the advisory at https://roundcube.net/news/2026/10/19/security-updates-1.6.20-and-1.7.5, the release tags https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.6.20 and https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.7.5, and the upstream commits https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/commit/d28a5703294e971a577e3c4f7bfc33362e3f04cf and https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/commit/0bea81121efd96f07432a837f391dbdd0dffa33f. If immediate upgrade is not possible, ensure ImageMagick is installed and configured so thumbnail generation does not fall back to GD, at the trade-off of adding an ImageMagick dependency and maintenance overhead, or disable thumbnail generation for untrusted image content, at the trade-off of user experience impact. Lowering the PHP memory_limit can convert exhaustion into a controlled PHP fatal error rather than full server memory pressure, but may affect other applications sharing the same PHP pool.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roundcube's rcube_image::convert() path uses ImageMagick resource limits and a mem_check() helper before processing images. The pre-patch code gated mem_check() with a PHP_OS test for 'WIN', so Linux and Unix installations skipped the available-memory check when ImageMagick was unavailable and the code fell back to PHP GD. A crafted image declaring very large dimensions then forces GD to allocate excessive memory, exhausting server memory. This is CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling), and the affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:roundcube:webmail:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*. The assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L reflects that exploitation is remote but constrained by the GD fallback requirement and a user action to trigger thumbnail generation; impact is limited to availability.

DescriptionCVE.org
Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 allows the ImageMagick resource limits to be bypassed during thumbnail generation. When rcube_image falls back to GD, the available-memory check was applied only on Windows, so on other platforms a crafted image with large dimensions was processed by GD without any resource limit and could exhaust server memory. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix ImageMagick resource limits bypass by GD fallback during thumbnail generation”, which applies the memory check on all platforms.
