| Exploitation Conditions | The affected application must parse attacker-supplied textual input into BSON binary elements - via the JSON reader's BinData, HexData, or legacy $type syntax, or by constructing a BsonBinaryData - using a binary subtype value outside the valid 0-255 range, and must then encode and persist that data. Exploitation therefore requires a code path that accepts untrusted text and writes it back out as BSON; it is limited to driver versions 2.0.0 up to but not including 3.13.0, and the realistic impact is data corruption (malformed/under-length binary elements) that later readers reject or silently truncate, not code execution, disclosure, or authentication bypass. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, integrity-focused issue rather than a top-priority emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) scores 6.9 and indicates a remote, low-complexity, unauthenticated reach, but impact is deliberately narrow: VC:N (no confidentiality loss), VI:L and VA:L (limited integrity and availability effects), with no scope change. The real-world effect per the vendor is BSON output corruption - malformed binary elements that downstream readers reject or misread - not code execution, data disclosure, or access-control bypass. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC reference is present in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; the vuln.today Decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a bug to patch on a normal cycle rather than act_now/emergency. One signal conflicts with the rest: the input Tag 'Authentication Bypass' is inconsistent with CWE-681 (incorrect numeric conversion) and with the description/Jira CSHARP-6166, which describe an integrity-check bypass on binary subtypes, not any authentication bypass - treat that tag as mislabeled, not as evidence of an auth-level flaw. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated user submits textual input (e.g., JSON with BinData, HexData, or legacy $type, or data that becomes a BsonBinaryData) carrying a binary subtype value outside the valid 0-255 range to an application built on an affected MongoDB C Driver. On encoding, the out-of-range subtype is narrowed to a smaller wire representation, so the application emits and persists binary elements that misdeclare their type or length. No public exploit code is referenced; the attack requires only that the app parse attacker-supplied text and write the result back as BSON. |

Applications using the MongoDB C
Driver (2.0.0 up to but not including 3.13.0) can be induced to write malformed BSON binary elements to the database when they parse untrusted text containing an out-of-range binary subtype value. The subtype is accepted during parsing, bypasses the library's UUID and OldBinary integrity guards, and is then narrowed to a single byte on encoding, so the persisted element misdeclares its type or length; downstream readers either error out or silently interpret the value as shorter than what was originally validated. Impact is integrity and limited availability damage from corrupted persisted data, not code execution or disclosure, and the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, VI:L/VA:L) and the independent 3.1 assessment agree it is unauthenticated but low-impact. No public exploit code or active exploitation is reported in the available sources, and the vendor priority is 'this_month' rather than an emergency.
RemediationAI
Upgrade the MongoDB C
Driver to 3.13.0 or later, which is the vendor-released patch for this issue and for the related CSHARP-6157, CSHARP-6162 and CSHARP-6168 hardening (see https://github.com/mongodb/mongo-csharp-driver/releases/tag/v3.13.0 and https://jira.mongodb.org/browse/CSHARP-6166). Because 3.13.0 makes BsonBinaryData, the JSON reader (BinData, HexData and legacy $type) and the binary writer throw on any subtype outside 0-255, and also rejects raw BSON with inconsistent declared lengths, treats BsonSymbolTable as obsolete and changes generated update/schema shapes, test ingestion paths and any code that previously relied on out-of-range or loosely formed input before deploying, since previously tolerated documents will now fail. If the upgrade cannot be applied immediately, add validation at the application boundary that rejects any BinData, HexData or $type subtype outside 0-255 and refuses malformed raw BSON, and avoid re-encoding text-derived binary values that have not been range-checked; these controls only cover code paths that pass through the validation layer and do not protect direct BsonBinaryData construction, so they are temporary until 3.13.0 is in place. Validate any already-persisted binary elements written by affected versions, since existing records may be truncated or structurally invalid and will surface as read errors or silent short reads.

Technical ContextAI · show details
BSON encodes a binary element as a subtype byte (valid range 0-255) plus a length prefix and payload, with subtype 4 (UUID) and subtype 2 (OldBinary) carrying additional structural requirements that the driver validates. The MongoDB C
Driver's JSON reader exposes three ways to author such elements from text: BinData(subtype, base64), HexData(subtype, hex) and the legacy {"$binary": ..., "$type": ...} form, alongside direct construction of BsonBinaryData. Per the vendor's release notes for CSHARP-6166, the flaw is a CWE-681 incorrect conversion between numeric types: a subtype supplied as a wider numeric type and outside 0-255 slipped past the integrity checks, then was narrowed when the binary writer produced the wire representation, yielding elements whose declared type or length disagrees with the bytes actually written. The 3.13.0 release makes BsonBinaryData, the JSON reader (BinData, HexData and legacy $type) and the binary writer reject any subtype outside 0-255. The same release bundles related hardening under separate advisories - rejection of raw BSON documents whose declared length is inconsistent with the buffer (CSHARP-6157), removal of unbounded BsonSymbol interning with BsonSymbolTable marked obsolete (CSHARP-6162), and stricter handling of single-element list rewriting in the update builder (CSHARP-6168) - so upgrade behavior changes extend beyond this CVE. Note that the supplied tag 'Authentication Bypass' is not supported by the assessed impact or by the vendor's own description, which concerns data corruption rather than credential or authorization bypass.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
A numeric-type conversion flaw in the BSON handling library of the MongoDB C
Driver allows an out-of-range binary subtype value supplied through untrusted textual input to bypass the library's binary-element integrity checks. When such a value is later encoded, it is narrowed to a smaller wire representation, producing binary elements that misdeclare their type or length. An unauthenticated party able to supply text parsed by an affected application can cause it to emit and persist malformed binary data, which subsequent readers either reject with an error or silently interpret as shorter than the data that was validated.
